10-goaler Hilario Ulloa led the Alegria attack with nine goals as they recoreded a 12-11 win over Washington Tuesday afternoon at the Tortugas Country Club.

Hilario Ulloa, one of the game’s newest 10-goalers, scored seven of his game-high nine goals as Alegría (Guillermo Caset, Hilario Ulloa, Lucas Monteverde and Fred Mannix) beat a persistent Washington lineup (Diego Cavanagh, Magoo Laprida, Facundo Sola and Alfredo Cappella) 12-11 in the opening game of the Tortugas Open at the Tortugas Country club Tuesday afternoon.

Alegria took the early 3-0 lead on a pair of goals from the field from Lucas Monteverde and a penalty goal from Ulloa. Washington was unable to score in the opening seven minutes and trailed 3-0.

Ulloa added two more penalty goals in the second while Washing ton was held to a single penalty conversion from Facundo Sola. Alegria continued to dominate, 5-1.

The Washington defenders stepped it up in the third, shutting down the Alegria attack for the first time all day. Unfortunately, they were unable to take full advantage of the effort, adding only a single penalty goal from Sola. Alegria continued to lead, 5-2.

Alegria started to distance themselves from Washington in the fourth as the team-play between Ulloa and Sapo Caset began to gel. Ulloa scored twice from the penalty line and once from the field. Caset scored his first goal as a member of the Alegria team as they moved in front by five goals, 9-4. Washington picked up single goals from Magoo Laprida and Sola (penalty).

Washington rallied in the fifth with three more goals from Sla (two on penalty conversions) and a goal from the field from Magoo Laprida. Ulloa kept Alegria from getting blanked with his seventh goal of the day. Washington cut the lead down to a manageable two goals, 10-8, with two chukkers left to play.

Diego Cavanagh and Magoo Laprida added single goals in the sixth while holding Alegria to a single penalty goal from Ulloa. Alegria continued to lead but Washington was within a goal of the lead, 11-10. Ulloa and sola traded penalty goals in the final chukker as Alegria held on for the 12-11 win.

Ulloa led all scoring with nine goals (seven on penalty shots). Monteverde scored twice and Caset added a goal for the win. Sola’s seven goals (six from the penalty line) set the pace for Washington. Magoo Laprida added three goals and Cavanagh scored once in the loss.

La Aguada-Las Monjitas 11, El Paraiso 10

Earlier in the day La Aguada-Las Monjitas (Alejandro Novillo Astrada, Eduardo. Novillo Astrada, Miguel Novillo Astrada and Ignacio Novillo Astrada) struggled with a determined El Paraiso (Agustin Merlos, Ignacio Toccalino, Ignacio Heguy and Santiago Toccalino) foursome before registering an 11-10 victory in Tortugas Open action.

El Paraiso took the early lead on first chukker goals from Cubi Toccalino and Tincho Merlos (penalty conversion). La Aguada-Las Monjitas scored on a penalty shot from Miguel Novillo Astrada but trailed 2-1.

Another penalty goal from Merlos was countered by single goals from brothers Miguel Novillo Astrada and Nacho Novillo Astrada. After two chukkers the score was all even at 3-3.

La Aguada-Las Monjitas took the lead in the third on goals from Eduardo Novillo Astrada and Miguel Novillo Astrada. El Paraiso tried to keep pace but were limited to a single penalty goal from Merlos. La Aguada-Las Monjitas left the field at the end of the third period with a narrow 5-4 advantage.

Both defenses tightened in the fourth. Miguel Novillo Astrada and Merlos traded penalty goals for the only scores in the chukker. La Aguada-Las Monjitas held on to their one goal advantage, 6-5.

Merlos added two more goals for El Paraiso in the fifth but La Aguada-Las Monjitas matched them goal for goal with Nacho Novillo Astrada scoring twice from the field. After five periods of play, La Aguada-Las Monjitas continued to hold the edge, 8-7.

Sixth chukker goals from Negro Novillo Astrada and Eduardo Novillo Astrada finally gave them a bit of separation from El Paraiso. Nachi Heguy scored a single goal for El Paraiso, who fell behind by two goals, 10-8.

Both teams played a defensive seventh chukker, once again limiting the goals to penalty conversions. Merlos converted twice for El Paraiso but a single penalty goal from Miguel Novillo Astrada was all La Aguada-Las Monjitas needed for the 11-10 victory.

Three of Miguel Novillo Astrada’s goals came on penalty shots. Nacho Novillo Astrada added three goals; Eduardo Novillo Astrada scored twice and Negro Novillo Astrada was credited with a goal for the win. Merlos scored seven of his game-high eight goals on penalty conversions. Toccalino and Heguy each added a goal in a losing effort.

Tortugas Open play is scheduled to continue on Saturday, Oct. 1st with a 3:30pm game between defending champion La Dolfina (Adolfo Cambiaso, David Stirling, Pablo MacDonough and Juan Martin Nero) and Paraiso (0-1). Ellerstina (Facundo Pieres, Gonzalo Pieres, Mariano Aguerre and Nico Pieres) will make their Tortugas Open debut on Sunday, October 2nd against Washington. Mariano Aguerre will be taking the place of Polito Pieres who will be serving out a one-game suspension following a penalty from last year’s Argentine Open final.
