It was a sad day for another soldier of the game. Former 7-goal player Miguel Torres, Sr. lost his battle with cancer earlier today. It has been a battle for the last 13 months and he is probably happy to end it as it has been tough. Especially for a man who has lived and loved the game of polo and most of all the horses for many years.

Miguel was born and raised in Argentina, but has been in the U.S. for at least 25 years. I think he first came here with Fortnaudo Gomez back in the the early 80’s in Midland, Texas. Miguel is survived by his 2 sons Miguel, Jr. and Santi and his wife Kelly. Miguel, Jr. and Santi have followed in their father’s footsteps and are doing quite well in the world of polo. His wife Kelly has been on nearly as many horses as Miguel. Miguel’s Mother is still often seen around the Santa Barbara Club.

Miguel has been in California for many years with Bill Meeker and was still overseeing his property in Santa Barbara at the time of his passing. He also was a big part of Piocho Ranch Polo for many years. He will be missed by many others as he was a big part in the lives of many young players in the Santa Barbara. Miguel helped them to ride, play and often loaned or gave them horses as well. So long Miguel. Our prayers and thoughts are with his family during this difficult time. S. Crowder

Miguel Torres Memorial Service and Tribute
There is going to be a tribute to Miguel on Sunday at 1:30pm prior to the PCO finals at The Santa Barbara Polo Club. The boys will be riding and I believe that Kellie’s father will be singing.

On Monday there will be a service at 11:00am at Mount Saint Carmel Church at 1300 East Valley Road in Montecito, California 93108 followed by a reception at Bill and Joseline Meekers house at 368 Lambert Road.

In regard to flowers and donations, we are looking into setting up a fund for donations in lieu of flowers that Kellie could manage.

The POLO PLAYERS SUPPORT GROUP INC will continue to forward 100% of all donations earmarked for Miguel. Donors will receive a tax receipt in the amount of the donation. Please send donations to Polo Players Support Group 11924 Forest Hill Blvd., Suite 22-287, wellington, FL 33414. For more info call David Offen 516-528-3821 or visit www.polosupport.com
