ALZHEIMER’S ASSOCIATION, GREATER NEW JERSEY CHAPTER HOSTS POLO CLASSIC 2010,

DENVILLE, N.J., March 18, 2010 – The Alzheimer’s Association, Greater New Jersey Chapter will hold its annual Polo Classic on Saturday, June 19, 2010, at the Hillsborough Country Club in Hillsborough, New Jersey.  The family-focused charity event, now in its 23rd year, is officially sponsored by Eisai Inc. and Pfizer Inc.  Proceeds will help benefit the programs and services the Association provides to the estimated 350,000 New Jersey individuals and their care partners who are affected by Alzheimer’s disease.

Kate Mulgrew, noted theatre, television and film actress, currently appearing on NBC’s Mercy and well known for her role of Captain Janeway on the hugely successful Star Trek Voyager, is the “Honorary Celebrity Chair.”  Ms. Mulgrew’s commitment to the Alzheimer’s Association is deeply personal; her mother, who passed away in 2006, had Alzheimer’s disease for several years.  In memory of her mother, Ms. Mulgrew is passionate about finding a cure for Alzheimer’s disease and supporting the thousands of families currently affected.

“In memory of my mother, Joan Mulgrew, who struggled for years with this devastating disease, and in honor of the hundreds of thousands of New Jersey residents who are affected, I fully support the efforts of the Alzheimer’s Association.  They provide absolutely vital programs and services to individuals coping with the ravages of Alzheimer’s disease and seek to eliminate the disease through the advancement of research,” said Ms. Mulgrew.  “I encourage individuals, families and businesses to join me in helping put an end to Alzheimer’s disease, while also helping to assist those coping with it, by supporting the Polo Classic.”

Linda Schmidt, reporter for Fox 5 News, is a celebrity guest, along with Miss New Jersey USA 2010 Chenoa Greene and Miss New Jersey Teen USA 2010 Erica Szymanski.

The Polo Classic features world-class polo players and ponies competing on a tent-lined field before thousands of attendees.  Complementing the polo match is a full schedule of activities with appeal across all ages: an antique and classic car display, hot air balloons (weather permitting), stilt walkers, balloon artists, a closest-to-the-pin golf contest, plus face painting, pony rides, and a trackless train.  At half-time, spectators can enjoy the Amwell Valley Hounds show and the traditional divot-stomping.  Tailgate gatherings inside tents range from elaborate catered parties to simple picnics.

In addition to Eisai Inc. and Pfizer Inc, other New Jersey-based corporations support the Polo Classic, including, this year, BAE Systems, HSBC Bank and M. Rothman & Co.

Gates open at 1 p.m., with the competitive polo match beginning at 3 p.m.  The alternate date is June 26. Vacation raffle tickets for a 4-night stay at the Loews Royal Pacific Resort in Orlando, Florida are also being sold for $5 a piece and $25 for a book.  (According to the IRS, raffle tickets are not tax deductible.)
