WELLINGTON, FL (December 26, 2006) – International Polo Club Palm Beach is continuing preparations to start its 2007 high-goal season on schedule, with Opening Day set for Sunday, January 14 at 3 p.m., despite the current EHV (Equine Herpes Virus) outbreak in South Florida.

“We’re constantly monitoring the EHV situation in Wellington,” said Jimmy Newman, Polo Manager for International Polo Club, the premier polo club in the United States. “The safety of the horses is the primary concern of everyone and we’re in constant communication with the local vets and all of the professionals working on this issue. We’re confident that this crisis will be over soon and we’re continuing our preparations for the 2007 season.”
Seven teams have already entered the club’s first tournament, the 22-goal Joe Barry Memorial Cup. However, at least one team may drop out since its horses have not been able to get enough training and exercise, according to Newman. No horses are permitted on IPC property until January 1, when the stick-and-ball field is available, which has always been the starting date, said Newman. Also, all horses are required to have a Rhino shot between seven and 90 days before entering the club property.

Most of the high-goal polo teams have private barns and fields in Wellington and that allows the horses to be exercised in preparation for the upcoming season.

Newman and his staff are keeping polo players and polo managers informed of the situation, many of whom have not arrived in Wellington. At least 20 high-goal teams are expected to participate in the 2007 season.
“We’re telling them to be ready to come down, but only after the OK is given by the local authorities,” said Newman. “The most important thing is to contain the virus and make sure the emergency is over. We are looking forward to another great season of fast, high-scoring polo.”

The club’s seven fields are in pristine condition, the stadium is ready to be filled with cheering spectators and finishing touches, such as lush landscaping, are being put on the grand marquee which was moved the east side.
The polo matches are open to the public. General admission for the Sunday games at International Polo Club Palm Beach is $10 for adults. Children under 12 enter for free. Tickets may be purchased at the gate on the day of the game.

International Polo Club Palm Beach is located at 3667 120th Avenue South, between Pierson Road and Lake Worth Road in Wellington. For information, directions or ticket purchases, please call the club at (561) 204-5687 or visit the website at www.internationalpoloclub.com.
