Goose Creek received ½ goal by handicap from Equus & Co., but couldn’t overcome an early deficit as they lost their first match in the 2012 Jan Pamela 12-goal Pro-Am Challenge Cup Monday morning at the International Polo Club in Wellington.

Both teams got off to a slow start, with Equus & Co.’s Jared Zenni scoring the only goal from the field in the opening chukker for an early 1-½ start.

Tano Vial opened the second period with a goal from the field for Goose Creek when the wheels seemed to come off of the wagon.  Three straight goals from Equus & Co. ended the chukker with Goose Creek trailing, 4-1½.  The Equus & Co. scoring began with a goal from the field from Zenni.  Adrian Wade converted a 40-yard penalty shot followed by a goal from Andres James.

Vial scored the first goal of the third period for Goose Creek, with Wade converting a penalty shot for a goal for Equus & Co.  The first half ended with Equus & Co. on top, 5-2½.

The defenses loosened up a bit in the second half, with each team putting three goals up on the scoreboard.  A pair of penalty goals from Goose Creek’s Jennifer Williams and a goal from the field from teammate Cote Zegers were countered by a two penalty conversions from Wade and Zenni’s third goal from the field.  Equus & Co. continued to lead, 8-5½.

A goal from the field from Zenni was sandwiched between two penalty goals from Goose Creek team captain, Maureen Brennan and cut into the Equus & Co. lead.  At the end of five chukkers of play, Goose Creek trailed by a goal-and-a-half, 9-7½.

James scored the first goal of the sixth chukker to give Equus & Co. a 10-7½ lead.  Vial converted a 60-yard penalty shot for Goose Creek and Zegers scored his second goal of the day, but the Equus & Co. defense held and Goose Creek fell in a hotly contested, 10-9½ contest.

A balanced Goose Creek attack had Williams, Brennan (Williams and Brennan scored their goals on penalty shots) and Zegers scoring two goals apiece.  Vial was credited with three goals (one by penalty) and the team received one-half goal by handicap.

Zenni and Wade (all four goals by penalties) scored four goals apiece for Equus & Co.

James added two goals in the win.
