Isla Carroll made short work of Orchard Hill in its opening round of play in the 2008 C. V. Whitney Cup at the International Polo Club in Wellington Saturday afternoon scoring a powerful 12-7 win and moving it into the quarterfinals of the prestigious tournament.
Isla Carroll’s talented 10-goaler Facundo Pieres set the pace with five goals as Orchard Hill fell behind 6-3 after the first three chukkers of play.
Orchard fought back, chukker after chukker, but it wasn’t in the cards for them. Isla Carroll stretched the lead to four goals, 10-6 after five chukkers and five goals by the end of regulation play in the 12-7 romp.
Even scoring by Isla Carroll saw Magoo Laprida putting the ball through the goal posts on three occasions while Marcos di Paola added four goals to the team’s total.
Orchard Hill’s Jeff Hall managed to put five goals on the board in the losing effort. Hector Galindo scored the other goal. Orchard Hill received one goal by handicap.

In earlier Whitney Cup competition, Audi continued its winning ways as it scored an exciting 9-8 win over a talent-laden Bendabout team that featured 10-goaler Miguel Novillo Astrada.
Audi received one goal by handicap, and aside from falling behind 3-2 after the first chukker of play, managed to hold the lead for most of the match.
Audi took a 7-5 lead into the halftime break, but Bendabout managed to tie it at 7-7 in the fourth chukker on goals from Mariano Gonzalez and Miguel Astrada.
Paco de Narvaez put Audi back on top with a penalty conversion before Gonzalez managed to tie it again at 8-8.
Gonzalito Pieres’ fourth goal of the game, however, proved to be the winning margin as neither team was able to score in the final two chukkers.
Audi will move on to play Isla Carroll in quarterfinal play on Wednesday, Feb. 27 at noon.
C. V. Whitney Cup play will continue on Sunday when Skeeterville meets Lechuza at 10 am. The 3 pm stadium match will feature Pony Express and Las Monjitas.
