The Polo Report

It was all Texas in the main games today at Eldorado Polo Club as Scott Woods of Houston led ERG to the top of the first trophy stand of the year. ERG took out Antelope in the first finals of the new decade. It was a good clean game with lots of speed and many big plays. There were a few too many fouls, but it was good polo for the first finals.

ERG got out front early on a couple of big runs and failed to convert two penalties to really have a solid lead, but Antelope with the hard-charging Walkers, Dan and Matt, came flying back to knot it up in the second at 2 each.  Then blew by ERG in the third to go up by 2 at half time. Scott gave his team ERG a pep talk at half time and they came roaring out in the 4th to lead by 2, outscoring Antelope 4 to 2 and 8 to 6 lead.  Antelope was not done. They tied it all up in the 5th to send them into the 6th all tied up. Martin Munoz and Scott Woods set the pace and the Fast-etta (Mariano Fassetta) and the Palomino (Jason Crowder) did what they do . . . flew and let them run. It came down to a big #5 penalty from way out that set the play as the 30 second bell had already rung and it was all over for the first big tournament of the winter season.

The weather was great and the fans not too bad even with San Diego Chargers playing in the playoffs and an earlier game for the Dallas Cowboys and they were not quite as lucky as ERG .

The second game could be called the Delta Dawn show as Dawn Jones, all 110 lbs of her, showed she has no doubt she can do it and she did.  She led a hard-charging San Saba down the field where they at one time had a 3 goal lead late in the game, but Palm Desert did not go away. Dan Horn of old Dandy Dan form put a light under his team and DW and boys tied it up, but Dawn was still around and made two very good plays to set it up. It was Senior Luis headed to pay dirt and he nailed the final goal.

It is fantastic to have both of these teams coming to Eldorado. They normally perform their winter polo in Florida, but decided to come west this year and we are very happy to have them.

Congratulations to the first 12-goal winners
