Those who came to Saratoga Polo this Sunday witnessed a gentlemen’s tie as Saratoga and Estrella each took home top honors in the Father’s Day Cup. The final score was 8-8.
Scoring was slow and steady over six chukkers, with neither team ever having a large lead. Saratoga’s Omar Sosa looked to change that after half time, scoring three times in the fourth chukker with another from Tony Coppola. Sosa scored the last of his 6 in the fifth, giving himself more than any other player on the evening and giving his Saratoga Team an 8-7 lead going into the final chukker.
With both teams hunkering down on defense in the final minutes, it looked like Saratoga would hold on to their single point margin, but Will Orthwein scored the lone goal of the sixth chukker on a penalty shot to knot everything up at 8. That score would end up being the final.
Will Orthwein led Estrella with 4 markers. Estrella also got 2, from Ricky Bostwick, 1 from George Hearst and 1 on handicap.
In addition to Tony Coppola and Sosa, Saratoga also got offence from Tab Orthwein who scored the first and only goal of the first chukker.
The Saratoga Saddlery Best Playing Pony was awarded to Godiva, one of the mounts Matt Coppola used in the match.
