A balanced Lechuza Caracas (2-0) attack took advantage of four goals in the fourth chukker to gallop over a misfiring Faraway Polo (0-2) team in second round play of the Ylvisaker Cup.  The match took place on the private grounds of the Lechuza Caracas Polo Club in Wellington.

The game began evenly with Faraway’s Julio Arellano scoring the first goal of the game before single goals from Tomas Goti and Santi Torres ended the chukker with Lechuza on top of a 2-1 score.

A re-energized Faraway attack took the field in the second chukker, and following Nicolas Espain’s opening goal for Lechuza, scored four consecutive goals (three from Julian Daniels and one from Julio Arellano) to take a 5-3 lead.

Lechuza returned to the field in the third chukker and played shutout defense while scoring four unanswered goals to reclaim the lead, 7-5.

“They were very well mounted,” said Faraway coach and former 9-goaler, Julian Hipwood.  “They’re an experienced team and they played well,” he added.

Lechuza pitched another shutout chukker in the fourth while Nicolas Espain and Tomas Goti each scored a pair of goals.  Missed shots and dropped passes plagued Faraway as the Lechuza lead grew to six goals, 11-5.

“I thought we had it going in the second chukker,” said Faraway’s Julian Daniels, who aboard his 12-year-old mare, Hollywood, scored three goals by himself, “but we just couldn’t get it done,” he said.

Victor Vargas scored his third goal of the game in the fifth followed by a goal from Arellano, Faraway’s first goal since the second chukker, and with seven minutes left to play, Lechuza led 12-6.

Faraway put three more goals on the scoreboard in the final chukker, but it was a case of too little, too late.  Lechuza remained undefeated with a 2-0 record while Faraway fell to 0-2.

Faraway’s Julio Arellano led all scoring with five goals.  Teammate Julian Daniels added four goals.

Lechuza’s balanced attack had Tomas Goti with four goals.  Nicolas Espain and victor Vargas scored three goals apiece with Santi Torres picking up a pair in the win.

Ylvisaker action will continue on Friday with a morning game between the Hawks (0-0) and Simon Garber’s Yellow Cab team (0-1).
