For the first three chukkers of the game it seemed as though the Detroit blues/Port Mayaca polo team could do little wrong.
It received one goal by handicap before falling behind 2-1 in the first chukker on goals by Audi’s Gonzalito Pieres and Chris Nevins.
Pieres scored Audi’s third goal of the game in the second chukker before the Detroit blues/Port Mayaca team got its offense on track. Goals from Julian Daniels and Luis Escobar tied it at 3-3.
Escobar opened the third chukker with a goal. Teammate Robert Orthwein scored the next goal before Escobar made it 6-3 in the third period. Nevins stopped the bleeding for Audi with a goal before Detroit Blues/Port Mayaca’s Collin McCosh scored the final goal of the chukker. Audi left the field trailing 4-7.
A renewed Audi rode onto the field for the second half with Pieres and Nevins scoring the first two goals. Escobar added his fourth goal of the game, but Pieres scored once again, and Audi was within a goal at 7-8.
The fourth chukker allowed every member of the Audi team to get on the scoreboard. Marc Ganzi, Gringo Colombres and Chris Nevins each scored once while Pieres collected three goals. Julian Daniels accounted for the only Detroit Blues offense with a single score, and Audi went on top, 13-9.
Pieres added two more goals in the sixth chukker for Audi while Daniels and Escobar each scored once for Detroit Blues/Port Mayaca in a losing effort as Audi won 15-11.
Pieres led all scoring with nine goals. Nevins scored four times and Ganzi and Colombres each added a goal for the win.
Escobar’s five goals led the Detroit Blues/Port Mayaca team. Daniels scored three times and McCosh and Orthwein added single goals.

CATAMOUNT 17, PIOCHO RANCH 6

Polo legend or not, Catamount (2-0) cut through Memo Gracida’s Piocho Ranch (2-1) team like a hot knife through cold butter Wednesday morning on its way to a one-sided 17-6 romp in the Grand Champions/Port Mayaca 18 Goal Masters Series.
The 10:30 am game took place at the Port Mayaca Polo Club, and aside from the first chukker that ended in a 3-3 tie, it was all Catamount.
“Everything went well for us today,” beamed Catamount team captain Scott Devon. “They missed some penalty shots and we finished every one of our plays,” he added, “I’ve been on both sides of games like this, and it’s definitely better being on the winning side.”
The Catamount defense smothered the Piocho Ranch team in the second and third chukkers, holding them scoreless while putting up nine goals to taking a 12-3 at the end of the first half.
“When you’re playing Memo Gracida you are always waiting for him to come back with a vengeance,” said Devon, “I kept looking over my shoulder until the fourth chukker,” he said, “but after that, I felt pretty comfortable with the game.”
Catamount took a 14-4 lead into the fifth period where they added goals from Kris Kampsen and Todd Offen. Julio Gracida got Piocho Ranch on the scoreboard with a single goal, but found his team on the downside of a 16-5 score.
“They had some bad luck early in the game,” said Catamount’s Brandon Phillips. “We were just hitting and going,” he said. “Everything was clicking for us, we finished our plays and it seemed as if every shot we took went in. Todd played great defense and did a good job distributing the ball.”
Single goals from Julio Gracida (a penalty shot) and Offen ended the game with Catamount riding off with the 17-6 contest.
Phillips led all scoring with nine goals, only three of them on penalty shots. Kampsen scored five times from the field and Offen accounted for three goals.
Piocho Ranch’s Memo Gracida, Julio Gracida and J. J. Celis scored two goals apiece in the loss.
