The Polo Report
By Steve Crowder

June 21st is the first day of Summer and it is also the longest day of the year.  With sunshine that is and the shortest below the equator. California polo was glowing today.  From the high Bay area to the land where the surf meets the turf as in San Diego Polo.  In San Diego there were glowing reports of huge crowds for Opening Day and other events in party town. They say it looked like Spreckel’s Cup instead of Opening Day, which means a lot of people were there.  Heather must be working hard this year. Not really … she usually does when not having Bon Bons and Starbucks.

Just north, up the coast a ways, it is Santa Barbara Polo Club being controlled by Mr. Burrows and Cecil’s Ribs.  They continue to get the WINs and head to the finals of the USPA Intra-Circuit 12 goal, which is the final 12-goal tournament of the season.

Sunday brought out perfect polo weather all along the coast on Father’s Day. It was in the high 70’s and sunshine  was present.  You can’t beat that!  Is polo getting out of it’s slump? I’m not sure, but people are at least watching it, so maybe the turn is near. We hope so! In some places they just do not know the slump is here. In the UK they have 20 teams … yes, 20 teams in the Gold Cup (aka the British Open).  It is likely to be the most expensive tournament in the World to compete in, so go figure that one out.  Do not ask Pelosi or whatever her name is.  Some politics for you.  I love the way the White House staff carries on about banks and oil companies.  These are all publicly traded companies and it would be interesting to know how many shares of these are owned or in trust funds by our fine politicians.  I doubt we want to know. Like the employment report up 42,000 jobs, but what they left out is 30 thousand + were hired by census counters and most of others were hired by Govt. or summer jobs. Not sure what our press really believes.

On another note … some interesting trivia about polo.  Santa Barbara is having their Centennial this year and the British Gold Cup is also celebrating the same.   Many of the Santa Barbara players are there now including the best Adolfo Cambiaso, who will undoubtedly perk up some interest in Santa Barbara this summer. Others like Carlos Gracida, some of the Astradas and Lyndon Lea will soon cross the pond to see the Gold Coast. So sit back and enjoy the world of polo. It is going to get better and we want YOU to be there .

See ya.
