Gold Cup opening weekend
Opening matches have taken place in The Veuve Clicquot Gold Cup for the British Open Polo Championships.

With teams drawn into five leagues, first to play were Talandracas and Sumaya, the Talandracas side of French patron Edouard Carmignac receiving a one goal advantage on handicap. It was a good free-flowing match with a superb exhibition of classical polo shots played by the Gracida brothers Carlos and Memo playing at Nos: 2 and 3 for patron Oussama Abu Ghazaleh´s Sumaya team. Carmignac´s new line-up of Alejandro Mussio (7) at No: 1, Guillermo Terrera (6) at No: 2 and Lolo Castagnola (9) playing an inspirational game at No: 3 proved, however, to be tough opposition for Sumaya and the Talandracas side claimed victory at 12-11.

In blistering temperatures, Sunday´s three matches attracted plenty of spectators. Ashbert Raiders vs Azzura was a gripping match with Prince Albert Esiri for Ashert Raiders giving an excellent lead to his players with two great goals. The side were, however, pipped on the doorstep with a final goal for Azzurra trickling between the posts at the final whistle to give a score of 11-10 in their favour.

Geebung dominated in their opening match with David Sterling and Bautista Heguy ably supported by Benjamin Araya at back. Even the combined power of 10 goaler Nachi Heguy and the 9 goals of Eduardo Heguy for Les Lions failed to prevent a 15-8 victory for the Geebung side.

Loro Piana met Atlantic to complete Sunday´s Gold Cup openers with the Macdonough brothers Pablo and Matias dominating play and treating spectators to another high scoring game with Atlantic the winners at 14-11.
