OSWEGO ROTARY HOSTS CHARITY EVENT AT ARRANMORE POLO FARM
By Karen Martino

John Greene’s Arranmore Polo Farm in Oswego, Illinois was the site of the sixth annual Rotary Club of Oswego’s “Chukkers for Charity” fundraiser last Saturday.

The event, which attracted several hundred guests, featured a four-chukker polo match, musical entertainment, an auction, dancing and dinner provided by My Chef, one of the top caterers in the Western suburbs.

Competing in the Rotary Cup were Arranmore – John Greene, Tim Greene, Maco Llambias and Anthony Garcia; and Morgan Creek – Bob McMurtry, Julian Aguilar, Vale Aguilar and Clifton Yandell.

Morgan Creek started with three on handicap, but Arranmore quickly caught up, with both Greenes and Garcia scoring in the first chukker. Julian Aguilar found the mark before chukker’s end to put Morgan Creek ahead 4-3. The second chukker belonged to Arranmore, with Garcia and Llambias scoring back-to-back goals to go up 5-4 at halftime. Vale Aguilar tied the score early in the third period, converting a Penalty 4; but an infraction by Morgan Creek gave Tim Greene the opportunity to put Arranmore ahead again.

Early in the fourth chukker, Llambias took the ball at midfield, scoring on a breakaway for a two-goal lead. Arranmore’s lead was short-lived, however, as Julian Aguilar got hold of the ball at the throw-in and carried it through traffic to score. With only seconds left, the umpire’s whistle sounded, giving Vale Aguilar the opportunity to convert a Penalty 3 and tie the game. Instead of playing an overtime chukker, the teams decided to shake hands and end the match at 7-all.

Trophies were presented by Maco Llambias’s grandmother, who was visiting from Argentina.

“It was another successful fundraiser for the Oswego Rotary, and we’re happy to host this annual event at the farm,” John Greene said. “Every year it gets better and raises more money for the community. The Rotary Club is already making plans for next year’s event.”
