GLITZ AND GLAMOUR OF POLO RETURNS TO HOLLYWOOD
California Polo Club Selected as Host of 2007 United States Polo Association National Arena Championship
The sport of polo will return to Hollywood when Los Angeles hosts the 2007 United States Polo Association (USPA) National Arena Championship Nov. . The California Polo Club, located minutes from Hollywood, was recently selected to receive the event, the highest rated national tournament of its kind.
“We’re thrilled to be hosting the 2007 USPA National Arena Championship,” said Ralph
Rosato, co-founder of the California Polo Club. “This tournament is truly one of the
most prestigious not only in the nation, but in the world. It’s exciting to be welcoming
polo of this caliber back to our city.”
Top polo professionals from across the world will contend for a win at the USPA
National Arena Championship. Elimination games will be played on Friday, November
2, the semifinals and finals on Saturday, November 3. Attendance of all matches is open to the public. Tickets can be purchased on the day of the event or by calling the event hotline at 424-832-6738.
Polo, the oldest team sport in the world, originated in Persia as early as the 6th century B.C., and the modern game was introduced to the western world in the 1800s by British cavalry stationed in India. The sport achieved popularity in Los Angeles and was played extensively during Hollywood’s golden era, with over 30 clubs in the area during the 1930s. The rising cost of real estate has caused most polo operations to move outside of the urban areas.
“By hosting the USPA National Arena Championship, we hope to spread awareness of polo,” Rosato said. “The game hasn’t been played at such an elite level in Los Angeles for some time, but the sport still exists here at the California Polo Club. It is absolutely an option for locals.”
