The Conflict has begun
The first cannon balls were fired across the beautiful fields of Mashomack today, setting off a series of conflicts that will eventually decide who will win the war that carries the label of the 2006 Eddie Moore. There were three major exchanges in today’s battles.
Game #1 Smithfield Farm (13) vs Bulltick Polo (9)
John Klopp hired in a new field general by the name of Francisco Bilbao for the Eddie Moore and Franky led his troops with a game and tournament high of 10 successful shots on goal. Now note that his ten goals is one more than the combined effort of the entire opposing team. Bilbao had four unanswered goals in chukker #4. However, the visiting squad that flies under the colors of Javier Guerra, who were down 11-3 at the end of four, were trying to sneak back thru the back door. Bulltick took chukkers five and six by a score of 6-2 with a combined effort by Hernan Tasso and Juan Otharan, leaving their total score only short by four.
Game #2 Stone Rows Farms (14) vs Burnt Mills Polo (6)
This game started out close, but seven goaler Gulli Aguero showed his handicap throughout the six chukkers, tallying nine times, scoring in every chukker. Guilli had a strong front line with the very able support of Father-son duo, Andy and Brian Fairclough. Andy & Brian are one of two Father-Son duos as John and Adam Klopp are together for Smithfield. Stone Rows Team sponsor Kim Foley was appointed the Secretary of Defense as he appeared to be well qualified for, as he help hold Burnt Mills to only 6. It was a great deal of fun to have Billy Paterniti in Mashomack, as he carries so much tradition and history with both polo in New Jersey and New England. Christopher Landon took out a knock-out punch by a high spirited chestnut, but was able to shake it off and finish the game. So try hitting yourself with a cement block with a thin coating of skin, and you pretty much get the feeling…the same feeling that Christopher felt..but pushed thru and continued play.
Game #3 Longfield Farm (15) vs Polo Do/Supersize (8)
There was much to do about Polo Do as everyone gathered to watch the magic of Michel Dorginac up against the raw power and talent that Duke Buchan has acquired. The defending champions, Longfield was re-configured as that polo workaholic by the name of Omar Sosa went out west….and another Zavaleta (Augustine) was brought back in, from the West. So would there be Longfield life after Sosa. Well…I guess Augustine helped Longfield get over the loss of Sosa, as Augustine galloped down field and scored nine times in five chukkers. Augustine’s strength is that he doesnt much care if the ball is on the ground or in the air, he seems to be able to hit from almost…..you got it…..anywhere. Brother Enrique and teammate Juan Olivera both added in three. The highlight of Polo Do/Supersize besides getting to watch Michel play polo, was to witness how well Matias Bullrich did in his very first 12 goal outing. Bruce Colley had an awesome backshot thru the uprights, but he and his teammates could not come up with enough awesome to hold back the overwhelming charge of Longfield.
The Conflict Continues Sunday, July 16 at Mashomack
1pm Don Langlois’s Buena Vista faces off against Rinaldini’s Tupungato
Tupunwhoto?? Where did they come from? Well, they be coming by way of the Long Island Expressway. Tupungato was runner-up to the south bracket champions last year in the Eddie Moore and they only lost by a nod to Lucas Criado and company. So you may not be real familiar with the Tupungato name, but you will be on Sunday as they arrive in Pine Plains to battle against Buena Vista. This year’s Tupungato is slightly re-configured. Luis Rinaldini and Martin Estrada are returning, but they are joined by Mauricio Deverient and Christian Alem. This year’s Buena Vista has also been re-built thru the dual efforts of Don Langlois and Sam Ramirez. They have plugged in brothers Tatin and Ezequiel Zubiaurre into the middle of the team. Tatin has already showed that he is nothing short of pure polo talent at the ripe old age of 23, but the jury is still out on his younger 17 year old sibling. Only their mother knows for sure….but soon, so will we, as they hit the field on Sunday. btw…somebody needs to get Mrs Zubiaurre a book of baby names for slightly challenged and aging polo managers(like me). Im still taking night classes on trying to pronounce Ezequiel, much less Zubiaurre. But they are sure a lot of fun to have here at the Club this year.
3:30pm Bulltick Polo will cross the Hudson once again to do battle with Longfield Farm
Well lucky Bulltick…they get to play both Smithfield Farm and Longfield Farm all in one weekend. That means that Sunday is a VIP contest for Hernan Tasso and his troops. It is pretty much a do or die march for Bulltick Polo. They were able to sit up on the grassy knoll and watch the Longfield tactics today. So Bulltick will take that intelligence back to their camp and will be drawing up some plans on how best to take down a giant. Be there Sunday to see what they may come up with.
