The Polo Report
By Steve Crowder
As the Gold Cup rolls into round two it is 0 and 2 or 2 and 0. The high-flying Hawks of the Canadian Mannix’s are flying forward as they continue soaring in this one. Young Fred and Little Mac Julian are going strong as they lead the Rocky mountain wagon when they blew by Orchard Hill and Faraway to lead their group by 6. With one more win they head to the final four.
In other brackets it is the same 2 and 0. Zacara with a California connection are also 2 and o as they smoked Valiente, the finalist in last tournament and did away with Bendabout today. As expected Mr. AC (Adolfo Cambiaso) is moving along well now with the T off his player is suddenly 2 and 0 as well. He did away with same two teams as Zacara leading to a big battle as two of the top players meet in round 3. The new 10 goal tiger Facundo Pieres and the Master Adolfo Cambiaso. They both have major help. With AC is Hilario Uloha and FP (Facundo Pieres) has the man Sebe Merlos in his back field.
The Valiente team seems to be saving horses as they were unstoppable in the first one and just lost the finals. Now they seem to be moseying along which could signal a wait and see for the big one just down the road … the US OPEN. We shall see.
The weather has been excellent and teams are staying on schedule with fine south Fl. weather. Out West it is back in action again as the Gray Beards and the Ladies finished an exciting weekend of Polo. It was a Time Zone thing as some of the people I saw in the Desert last weekend make you remember why the Desert was so much fun a short time ago. General Lee as in Pettigrew was in town. Ron Mathision, the shortest guy in Calgary, but he has the biggest building was also in town. John and Delta Dawn Rooney were also in the city of Sage and Cactus. Cam Clark, who has been in and out was there. We just needed Fred Mannix and Ron Greene and you would have thought we were in the Rockies. Heck, most of them were playing and you talk about feeling OLD … Joel Baker, Joe Henderson, Marcello Abbiati and Craig Ramsby were all on teams in the Seniors too.
It was a very fun weekend and the Ladies or Chicks with Sticks were in fine form as they came from all over … Arizona, Texas, Kansas, Canada and Argentina as well as California. I heard that the Cam Clark Ford’s were first as they were in Las Vegas NASCAR it was just a Ford weekend I reckon.
Bad news also as Alex Hagen III is in the Hospital after holding a tumbling horse from hitting the ground with his body and now he needs the Vet. The horse is fine, however. Domingo Questel is packing a cast, One Eye Ernie is sporting Plaster and a Lovely Lady from LA is in recovery from a tumble on the pitch (Jenny), but I bet she has lots of visitors. Hope you all get well soon and AH3 remember the Lions are ready to Roar and a hungry Lion is, well, looking for people who cannot run. GET WELL SOON
See ya.
You do ramble Crowder, but I love your blogs! I am also part of the crash and burn group this season-there are plenty of us! My ankle has 14 pins and a plate..similar to Dan Walkers, but he beat me with a rod in his leg I understand. The same Dr. for Dan, myself and also the Uretz leg..he actually asked me to get a group photo of Domingo, Ernie, Dan, myself, Mr. Haagen, Uretz..everyone as he said it’s the most polo wrecks he’s ever dealt with in one season! What is up with THAT? I must say that in my case, Graydon Britton, has been so kind and gracious. He keeps track of my progress and has offered to help me with the hospital bills..What an unbelievably generous thing to do! Polo players stick together and we all know that it could be YOU the next time. These wrecks that break bones or worse (Mr. Haagen), not only cause pain, but also change your life for many months and often longer. Thanks on behalf of me (and all my broken polo friends)…what a wonderful community I am lucky to be a part of for so many years.
Steve Crowder might havementioned that the “exciting weekend of Polo” with the gray beards and Ladies was at Eldorado. No matter what he does not want to mention them. He might as well check his accuracy about results as well.
If you want your games and results posted on PoloZONE.com please email them to me directly and I’d be happy to post them. lynn@polozone.com
Crowder’s column is an opinion column and he volunteers his time to write it. He does not cover all events or tournaments.
I think he does a great job and I look forward to Crowder’s posts! Keep it up!
