Julio Gracida scored ten goals Tuesday in Bud Light/ERG’s (1-1) romp over Mt. Brilliant (0-2) in the second round of play in the 2008 Joe Barry Memorial Cup at the International Polo Club in Wellington.

The highlight of the match, however, might have been the fact that Mt. Brilliant’s Kris Kampsen was issued three red cards by the umpires and ordered to sit out of most of the fifth chukker.
“They showed no respect for one another today, there was absolutely no teamwork,” said Mt. Brilliant’s coach Julian Hipwood. “They played as individuals,” added the former 9-goaler, “they never gave a thought to playing for one another. I’m very disappointed.”

Mt. Brilliant built an early 3-1 lead before allowing Bud Light/ERG back into the game in the second chukker with three unanswered goals.

The teams each scored three goals in the third period, with Bud Light/ERG leaving the field with a narrow 7-6 halftime lead.

Scrappy play was the tone of the second half as tensions mounted. Gracida converted two penalty shots, while goals from Hector Galindo and Roberto Gonzalez gave Bud Light/ERG a handy 11-7 advantage.

In the fifth chukker the Mt. Brilliant team imploded. Talented players were riding this way and that. Bud Light players were left unguarded, and when the frustration of the moment peaked, Kampsen received his third red card of the game and was sent off for the remainder of the chukker.

Outnumbered 4-3, Mt. Brilliant gave up goal after goal. The chukker ended with Bud Light on top of a 16-7 score.

Mt. Brilliant fought gamely back, but it would be Bud Light that would leave the field with a 17-11 victory.

Gracida led all scorers with ten goals. Gonzalez scored six times and Galindo added a single goal in the win.

Kampsen led Mt. Brilliant with nine goals. Goodman and Hall scored single goals in the loss.
