Thermal, CA (February 10, 2008) – It was previously written that the law had not caught up with the gangsters of Southern California. That changed on Sunday in the final of the Corleone Cup, at the La Quinta Polo Club, as Steve Armour and Chris Maloney’s Shanghai/Tri Tech defeated the Bill Freeman and Sean Keys Corleone/Hidden Creek Family by a score of 11 – 10. Played on an absolutely perfect afternoon for polo, this game was, most certainly, the best of the young season. The loss was the first of 2008 for the Godfather Freeman and his lieutenant Fergus Gould.
With Abby Riggs replacing Armour – out with a respiratory illness – the winners had to spot the Family a goal at the start. It was the only lead they would have as Riggs got it back early in the first to propel the eventual champions to a cushion of two after that period and they went on to lead after each of the next five.
Adding to the marker from Riggs, Gaston von Wernich had five, Rob Yackley provided four, and Maloney one.
For Corleone/Tri Tech, Graham Bray was again strong, this time with four, Keys and Gould scored a pair each, and Freeman supplied one. The award at the start made 10.
With the completion of the Corleone Cup, interest turns to the upcoming Ohana Tournament. Line-ups for this event will be published later in the week. As yet there is no scheduled date to play the delayed final of the Hidden Creek Open.
