A balanced scoring attack had Equuleus on top of Yellow Cab 8-4 as the team galloped on to score its second straight Monty Waterbury Cup win, 13-9, at the Bridgehampton Polo Club Monday morning.
“We’re playing so well as a team,” offered Equuleus 6-goaler Kris Kampsen, “the horses are going well and everything is clicking for us.”
Michel Dorignac scored the first goal of the game for Yellow Cab on a 40-yard penalty shot before Equuleus responded with two goals from Mariano Obregon. A second penalty goal from Dorignac left the score all even at 2-2 at the end of the first chukker.
Kampsen opened the second period with a goal from the field followed by a penalty
conversion from teammate Mariano Gonzalez. Dorignac responded with another penalty goal, with Gonzalez closing out the chukker giving Equuleus a 5-3 advantage.
Equuleus charged out to an 8-3 lead in the opening minutes of the third period. Consecutive goals from Obregon, Gonzalez and Kampsen had Yellow Cab back on their heels, struggling to shut down the Equuleus offense. Luis Escobar finally
broke the scoring drought for Yellow Cab and the first half ended with Equuleus
boasting a comfortable 8-4 lead.
Kampsen wasted no time in the second half, scoring his third goal of the game and
giving Equuleus a comfortable 9-4 cushion before Yellow Cab responded. Yellow Cab team captain Simon Garber scored from the field and Dorignac added another goal, cutting the Equuleus lead to three goals, 9-6. That was when Kampsen
shifted into overdrive and scored two unanswered goals for Equuleus to close
out the chukker. Equuleus left the field on top of an 11-6 score with two chukkers left to play.
Fifth chukker goals from Gonzalez and Obregon stretched the Equuleus lead to seven goals, 13-6 before Yellow Cab could get on the scoreboard again. A penalty goal from Escobar was all the offense Yellow Cab managed to muster and the period ended with Equuleus ahead, 13-7.
“They’re (Yellow Cab) a much better team than the score indicates,” said Kampsen. “We’re just really hitting our stride,” he added, “we’re really jelling as a team.”
Yellow Cab closed out the final chukker with a goal from the field and a final penalty goal from Dorignac, but Equuleus rode off with the 13-9 victory.
Kampsen led the scoring for Equuleus with five goals while teammates Obregon and Gonzalez added four goals apiece in the win.
Dorignac set the pace for Yellow Cab with five goals, all on penalty shots. Escobar scored three times and Garber added a goal.
Play will continue in the 2011 Monty Waterbury Cup on Saturday, July 30, with a 4pm game scheduled between Certified (0-1) and Heathcote (1-0).
