LONGFIELD FARM CLAIMS WHITNEY CUP, ADVANCES IN YLVISAKER – Enrique Zavaleta powered Longfield Farm past Estrella/Tackeria to claim the Whitney Cup at Saratoga Polo on Sunday evening with a final score of 12-9.

Enrique, playing the backfield Number Four position, scored like clockwork, starting the match out with a pair of unanswered goals in the first chukker and never looking back. He scored at least once in every single chukker except the third and converted on two penalties to finish with 8 markers, leading all scorers. Juan Olivera and Agustin Zavaleta each had 2 tallies for the winners.

Like the match victors, Estrella/Tackeria relied on their Number Four for the majority of their offense. Guilli Aguero worked both ends of the field, providing defense and scoring 6 times on the day. Ricky Bostwick had 2 scores and Tony Coppola also scored for Estrella/Tackeria.

While Marylou Whitney was not available this year to present the Whitney Cup’s signature sterling silver mint julep glass trophies to both teams and help the victors drink from the Cup, Saratoga Polo Managing Partner Jim Rossi received help bestowing the honors from Brenda Lynn and George J. DuPont, Jr. of the National Museum of Polo and Hall of Fame, who also treated the crowd to a stirring speech on the importance of both Whitney and her family to the sport of polo over the years.

The Whitney Cup win advances Longfield Farm in the Ylvisaker Cup tournament. Ylvisaker Cup action continues on Wednesday, August 2nd at 5:30 pm at Saratoga Polo. For more information, call 518-584-8108 or visit saratogapolo.com.
