Two matches got the 2013 Primavera March 12-goal underway as Goose Creek scored a 7-6 win over Jan Pamela while Yellow Cab fell to Iberia Bank, 9-8 to set up Friday’s finals and consolation match in the four goal field.
Goose Creek’s Tano Vial scored the first two goals in the morning matchup with Jam Pamela. Vial converted a 60-yard Safety for the first goal and drove the ball through the Jan Pamela goalposts for the second goal of the game, 2-0. Jan Pamela’s Steve Dalton answered with a final goal to cut the Goose Creek to a single goal, 2-1.
Both defenses stepped up in the second period, ending any offensive contributions by either side. After two chukkers, Goose Creek maintained its 2-1, one goal lead.
Jan Pamela got back on track in the third chukker. Dalton’s second goal came from the field and a third on a 60-yard penalty conversion. Jan Pamela had taken the lead, 3-2. Vial scored for the third time to close out the chukker. At the midway mark, Jan Pamela and Goose Creek were deadlocked at 3-3.
In a defensive-oriented fourth chukker Jan Pamela’s Tommy Collingwood scored the only score of the period on a goal from the field. Goose Creek was shutout and trailed at the end of the chukker, 4-3.
Cote Zegers scored twice from the field in the fifth for Goose Creek, but a single goal from Jan Pamela’s Mason Wroe had it all even at 5-5 with one chukker left to play.
Dalton scored his fourth goal of the day on a 40-yard penalty conversion, but Goose Creek answered back. A goal from the field from Zegers and a 60-yard penalty goal from Vial won the game, 7-6.
Vial led the Goose Creek team with four goals. Zegers added three goals for the victory. Dalton scored four times for Jan Pamela. Collingwood and Wroe each added a goal in the loss.
IBERIA BANK 9, YELLOW CAB 8
Displaying the parity of the field in the second one goal game of the day, Iberia Bank registered a 9-8 win over Yellow Cab, earning a berth in Friday’s tournament finals against Goose Creek.
The eleven goal Iberia Bank team received one goal by handicap and quickly added to it with a goal from the field from Luis Escobar for a 2-0 advantage. Yellow Cab responded with a penalty goal from Tavi Usandizaga and a goal from the field from his brother, Guille Usandizaga for an opening chukker 2-2 tie.
Iberia Bank poured it on in the second with two more goals from Escobar, one from the field and one on a Safety conversion for a 4-2 lead, Yellow Cab was unable to get on the scoreboard in the second chukker of play.
Yellow Cab cut into the Iberia Bank lead in the third period, picking goals from Tavi Usandizaga on a 40-yard penalty shot and Bill Patterson. A single goal from Gabriel Crespo kept Iberia Bank in the lead, 5-4, at the end of the first half of play.
A 40-yard penalty conversion from Escobar extended the Iberia Bank lead to two goals with a penalty goal in the fourth, 6-4. The Usandizaga brothers each scored a goal in the chukker and after four periods of play it was all even at 6-6.
Iberia Bank wrested control of the game back from Yellow Cab in the fifth. A penalty goal from Jared Zenni and Escobar’s fifth goal of the game gave the lead back to Iberia Bank, 8-6. Tavi Usandizaga scored the team’s only goal of the chukker in the fifth and here team was getting ready for the 6th chukker showdown.
Goals were hard to come by in the sixth, with Tavi Usandizaga scoring the first goal of the chukker for an 8-8 tie. Two minutes later Escobar scored on a great individual effort for a 9-8 lead that they would preserve until the final horn sounded.
Escobar led all scoring with six goals. Zenni and Crespo scored single goals in the win and the team received one goal by handicap. Yellow Cab’s Tavi Usandizaga scored five times in a losing effort. Guille Usandizaga added two goals and Bill Patterson scored once.
