Over 8,000 spectators showed up on New Jersey’s Liberty Island Saturday afternoon for the sixth annual Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic.  With crowd favorite Nacho Figueras relegated to the sidelines for the June 1st event, the crowd was treated to the high-goal debut of his thirteen-year-old son, Hilario.

Tickets for the popular event sold out in 4 ½ hours as Nacho Figueras and co-hosts Mathew McConaughey and Veuve Clicquot Vice President Vanessa Kay presided over another successful fund that would help restore Liberty Park to pre-Hurricane Sandy conditions.

Nacho’s Black Watch team of Bash Kazi, Rico Mansur, Hector Guerrero and his son, Hilario Figueras rode to an exciting 8-6 win over Nespresso (Kris Kampsen, Alexis Rodzianco, Hernan Traverso and Alan Adler) before an enthusiastic assemblage of polo fans and stylistas.

As for young Hilario’s high-goal debut in the United States, it went well.

“Hilario played well for a 13-year-old kid,” said his proud father.  “He scored three goals.” Nacho beamed, “I was very proud and happy to see him play.”

As for Nacho, it’s going to be another 10 weeks before he can even consider mounting up again, but that hasn’t kept him from banging the promotional drum to advance the sport.
