WILDWOOD/WOODLAWN, MT. BRILLIANT B WIN BARRANTES
Another day, another double-header in The Hector and Susan Barrantes Memorial Cup at Saratoga Polo. The matches on Friday were both nail biters with 1-goal margins.
The early match featured two teams both eager to prove themselves after coming off of losses earlier in the tournament. In the end, Gaston Lisioli scored the last of his 5 goals on the day to bring Wildwood/Woodlawn past Bloomfield/Gene’s Cleaning with a final score of 12-11. Julian Hipwood also notched in 5 and Cathy Brown had another one for the early winners. Bloomfield/Gene’s Cleaning was led by Cuko Escapite with 4 goals and Jube Baez with 3.
The later match, featuring teams who had both won earlier in the tournamtent, was arguably the most exciting so far and definitely the first all season to go into overtime. In the end, Whystle Uys managed to convert on a penalty shot to score his fourth on the day and carry Mt. Brilliant’s B team over Longfield Fram with a final score of 8-7.
Mt. Brilliant B mounted a comeback that can only be described as Brilliant after trailing Longfield 4-0 after Tatin Zubiaurre scored 2 goals in each of the first 2 chukkers. Whystle Uys started to mount a comeback for Mt. Brilliant B with a goal apiece in the third and fourth chukkers, and then combined with Willie Hartnett for 4 unanswered goals in the fifth to take the lead for the first time all match. Nick Cifuni added another for Mt. Brilliant B in the sixth, but Longfield’s Juan Olivera responded with 2 of his 3 on the day to close out regulation and send the game into over time.
Whystle Uys scored the game winner off of a penalty 2 shot with 2:35 to end the sudden death seventh chukker.
Polo Do makes their Hector and Susan Barrantes Memorial Cup debut on Saturday, August 12th as they take on Mt. Brilliant’s A Team at 5:30pm at Saratoga Polo. The Barrantes Cup continues after that with a doubleheader on Sunday. For more information, call 518-584-8108 or visit saratogapolo.com
