Azzaro, Roldan, Escapite and Collingwood to represent U.S. against national teams from Argentina, England and Hong Kong at Tianjin Goldin Metropolitan Polo Club, in Tianjin China
As international polo competition continues to gain worldwide popularity, four powerhouse teams from the world’s top polo nations will battle it out for top international honors in the 2013 Fortune Heights Super Nations Cup. The 24-goal tournament will take place October 1-5 at China’s exclusive Tianjin Goldin Metropolitan Polo Club, and will feature world-class professional players from the U.S., Argentina, England and Hong Kong.
The Argentines look to defend their title after edging out the Americans 9-8 in a riveting final of last year’s inaugural event. Last year’s Super Nations Cup MVP, a former 10-goaler, Mike Azzaro (8), returns with hopes of leading the American team to victory in his second time as captain. Also on the U.S. team this year are: Nic Roldan (8), Ulysses Escapite (4) and Tommy Collingwood (4), with team coach and alternate Joel Baker (2)
“With a combination of veteran leadership and young talent, we are extremely proud of this U.S. team,” said Peter Rizzo, CEO of the United States Polo Association. “We look forward to another opportunity at the coveted title and trophy this year and, hopefully, many more years to come.”
Played at 24 goals, the Fortune Heights Super Nations Cup is one of the world’s highest-level international polo tournaments. It is hosted by the Chinese Equestrian Association and the Federation of International Polo (FIP). Established in 1982, the FIP aims to promote and enhance the sport of polo globally and unite national polo associations across the world. The United States Polo Association is a member of the FIP.
