Eduardo Heguy showed flashes of earlier days as he set the pace for Chapaleufú (Alberto Heguy, Francisco Elizalde, Bautista Heguy and Eduardo Heguy) Monday afternoon with eleven goals in the team’s 15-13 win over La Matera (Diego Cavanagh, Guillermo Terrera, Ignatius Du Plessis and Tomás García del Río) on the polo grounds at Palermo to become the first team to qualify for a berth in the Hurlingham and Argentine Open joining the country’s six premier teams (Ellerstina/Piaget, La Dolfina, Alegria, La Aguada, Natividad and La Aguada/Las Monjitas).
Both Chapaleufú and La Matera carried the ball up and down the field with skill, battling through an uneventful first chukker to a 2-2 tie.
An aggressive Chapaleufú attack in the second chukker had La Matera players fouling in an effort to avert the goals, enter Eduardo Heguy. The former 10-goaler converted five penalty shots while he and his teammates kept La Matera from scoring. The second period ended with Chapaleufú in front, 7-2.
La Matera got back on track in the third chukker, outscoring Chapaleufú 4-2 (all four goals from Cavanagh) and cutting the lead to three goals, 9-6.
The fourth chukker was an equitable effort by both sides. Each team managed two more goals. Chapaleufú held its three goal advantage, 11-8.
For the first time all day La Matera was able to shutout the Chapaleufú attack, adding there goals of their own. After five chukkers of play, the game was all even at 11-11.
Sixth chukker goals from Diego Cavanagh (a 30-yard penalty conversion) and Tomas Garcia del Rio were countered by a single goal from Eduardo Heguy. After six chukkers of play, La Matera held a delicate 13-12 lead.
Eduardo Heguy tied it up with his tenth penalty conversion of the day and Bautista Heguy put Chapaleufú back in the lead, 14-13. Alberto “Pepe” Heguy scored the insurance goal, 15-13, while La Matera was unable to spark any successful attack in the final minutes of the game.
Eduardo Heguy led all scoring with eleven goals (ten on penalty shots). Alberto “Pepe” Heguy scored three times and Bautista Heguy added a single goal. Cavanagh led the La Matera attack with nine goals (four on penalty conversions). Guillermo Terrera scored three times and Garcia del Rio scored once in a losing effort.
On Tuesday, October 8, Magual (Alejandro Muzzio, Ignacio Toccalino, Marcos Di Paola and Jaime Huidobro) will face Cuatro Vientos (Juan M. Zavaleta, Juan A. G. Grossi, Alejandro Agote and Santiago Tanoira) to decide the final qualifying team for Hurlingham and the Argentine Open.
