UAE on the attack as they record a win in their opening Cartier Queens Cup match

The UAE Polo Team (Kian Hall, Lucas Monteverde, Pablo MacDonough and Ollie Cudmore) made an impressive showing Saturday morning in their opening match of the 2014 Cartier Queens Cup, notching a 14-1…3 win over Lucchese (John Muse, Lucas James, Nico Pieres and Luke Tomlinson) for a 1-0 record. The loss by Lucchese drops their record to 1-1, having scored an earlier win over Talandracas on the second day of tournament play.
With 16-year-old Kian Hall playing in place of patron Sheikha Maitha Al Maktoum, UAE took early control of the game, racing out to a 4-3 first chukker lead. The two teams exchanged goals in the second chukker, each side accounting for three scores to end the period with UAE in the lead 7-6.
For the second straight chukker UAE and Lucchese traded goals. The third period ended with UAE maintaining their narrow one goal advantage for the 9-8 halftime lead.
A refocused Lucchese team took the field in the fourth chukker, outscoring UAE three goals to two and tying the game up at 11-11. UAE regrouped for the fifth chukker and shut down Nico Pieres and the Lucchese attack. UAE scored two goals of their own, however, and moved in front by two goals, 13-11.
Lucchese staged a mini-rally in the sixth and final chukker, but came up on the short end of the 14-13 score.
Talandracas 9, Cortium 7
Later in the day Edouard Carmignac’s talented Talandracas polo team (Edouard Carmignac, Juan Martin Nero, Polito Pieres and Santiago Stirling) battled the rain and finally got on the winning track with a 9-7 win over Cortium (Francisco Elizalde, Salvador Ulloa, Tomas Garcia del Rio, Adrian Kirby).
Talandracas was surprised by Lucchese on the second day of tournament competition with an 11-10 loss. The victory levels their record at 1-1. Cortium also boasts a 1-1 record, having beaten Black Bears in overtime, 10-9 in their first Cartier Queens Cup game.
Cartier Queens Cup action continues on Sunday at noon with Twelve Oaks (Juan Gris Zavaleta, Magoo Laprida, Iñaki Laprida and Stefano Marsaglia) facing the all-pro Fox & Hounds team (Max Routledge, George Meyrick, Jack Richardson and Tom Morley). At 3pm El Remanso (Scott Luard, Charlie Hanbury, Pelon Stirling and Guillermo Terrera) is scheduled to play EFG Bank Araveli EFG Bank (Jaime Garcia Huidobro, Alejandro Muzzio, Joaquin Pittaluga and Karan Thapar).
