Wildwood and Tackeria teamed up to claim a narrow victory over Mt. Brilliant’s A team in the Eight Annual David N. Deutsch and Company Cup at Saratoga Polo on Friday. The hard fought cup, which also served as the consolation match in The Hector and Susan Barrantes Memorial Cup Tournament, had a final score of 11-10.
The first half was punctuated by high scoring chukkers for both teams. Wildwood/Tackeria’s Guilli Aguero had 3 goals to put his squad in front in the first, but Guillermo Usandizaga registered tallies twice in each of the first two chukkers and Mt. Brilliant also got another pair of markers in the second from Stevie Orthwein to claim the lead at the end of two.
Wildwood’s Julian Hipwood and Cathy Brown each got between the goal posts once in the third to close out the half with a tie score.
The scoring in the second half slowed down somewhat, with both teams vigorously fighting for possession and matching each other goal for goal. The only exception was the fifth and penultimate chukker, where Mt. Brilliant was held to one goal while Hipwood and Aguero combined to put 3 on the board for Wildwood/Tackeria.
While the fifth chukker put Wildwood/Tackeria up in front once again, the match was far from over, as Usandizaga scored first in the sixth with his seventh and final goal on the day to tie it all up. Aguero responded, however, with the last of his eight to lead all scorers. From there, Wildwood/Tackeria successfully ran down the clock.
Mt. Brilliant’s B team will face off against Polo Do in the finals of the Hector and Susan Barrantes Memorial Cup at Saratoga Polo on Sunday, August 20th at 5:30pm. For more information about Saratoga Polo, call 518-584-8108 or visit saratogapolo.com.
