The United States polo team defeated Argentina 11-10 in overtime a few moments ago. The win propels the USA to the semi-final round as it was Argentina’s second loss in the group round.
The USA’s Felipe Viana scored in overtime to give the USA the victory after a competitive game that the USA generally controlled throughout, though Argentina held a 10-9 lead late in regulation. Viana also tied the game with a goal from about 130 yards out to send the game into overtime. The USA jumped out early in the game, leading 3-0 at the end of the first chukker. Argentina stormed back to narrow the USA’s margin to 7-5 at the end of the fourth chukker and then pulled ahead in the sixth.
Jesse Bray led the US scoring with 6 goals, Felipe Viana had 3 and Patrick Uretz had 2.
Coach Joel Baker quote: “I am so proud of these guys. Not only did they beat them on the field but had to come from behind to win in overtime. We are all very proud we sent the defending champs home.”
USPA CEO Peter Rizzo quote: Our team worked extremely hard to prepare for this incredibly difficult game. It was a great game and Argentina was a tremendous competitor on the field,” said Peter Rizzo, Chief Executive Officer of the United States Polo Association. “The USPA is exceedingly proud of how Team USPA played and represented our country as great players and sportsmen.”
