In a huge event growing 10-fold a year, it is all about retired Racehorses which can be any horse who cannot win enough to keep going, similar to Polo. They have created second careers for these horses and they can be Barrel Racing to Polo horses and we already know many succeed in Hunting and Jumping but a Roping horse, or a Cutting horse it is all about training. A young man named Charlie Caldwell who had a famous trainer himself Tommy Wayman, former Polo superstar 10 goals he was, and he did a 10-goal job to win this one. They must be registered Jockey Club horses and have been entered to race to be eligible. They come and compete in the Thoroughbred Makeover @ the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington every October. Charlie did very well and sold his horse to Young Gun Matt Coppola for a Polo prospect which is way past the prospect part and will play Polo in West Palm Beach this Winter. Most of us in this world love horses and this is an amazing chance for the 40,000 horses bred every year to race. POLO TAKES CENTER STAGE AS RETIRED RACE HORSE WINS “AMERICA’S MOST WANTED THOROUGHBRED” IN THOROUGHBRED MAKEOVER
Polo took center stage at the Thoroughbred Makeover finale October 8 at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. Charlie Caldwell’s 3-year-old mare, Old Tavern, earned the title of “America’s Most Wanted Thoroughbred” and now belongs to polo pro Matt Coppola.
The Thoroughbred Makeover and National Symposium is the flagship event of the Retired Racehorse Project based in Davidsonville, Maryland, and over the last four years it has grown to become the premier event for OTTBs. To be eligible, horses must be registered and tattooed or microchipped with the Jockey Club, have raced or published a workout after July 1, 2015, and could not start their training for a second career before December 1, 2016.
The winner of the Makeover, nicknamed Taberna, is by Peak Dancer out of a King Cugat mare, Modest Madame. Caldwell bought her from breeder Larry Curtis of Middleburg, Virginia.
So, what was the secret to Taberna’s success in the Makeover? A steady hand and a large network of friends. Caldwell brought Taberna along the same way he has brought along his other prospects, with the help of renowned horseman Tommy Wayman, who he worked with all summer while playing at Flying H Polo Club in Big Horn, Wyoming.
The Mission of Retired Racehorse Project exists to facilitate placement of Thoroughbred ex-racehorses in second careers by increasing demand for them in equestrian sports. Since it’s 2010 founding, Retired Racehorse Project has been inspirational. Thanks to continued press coverage, sell-out crowds at horse expos, and the $100,000 Thoroughbred Makeover held at the Kentucky Horse Park featuring nearly 400 horses this year competing in 10 different disciplines, the popularity and value of these elite sport horses is on the rise.
