In the world of sports there is POLO as we know it. It is the fastest team sport and one of the most dangerous, exciting and addicting things a person can do. It should be one of the Extreme Sports and it is not because it has very little press or puablic exposure for many reasons. Some of of it has to do with the Patrons. Many are private people and have enough aggravation in their work world and find peace in polo their horses. Some want safety by being unknown and avoiding public awareness, but love the thrill of speed and power of the quiet partner, their horses. They prefer people in general do not know of their whereabouts and often these are the men who make Polo what it is and where it is. Others like the glory and the hype and run around all day in their whites and boots. It takes all of us to make the sport what it is. Last night I was one of several, mostly Ladies of polo, to see the Ring of fire at the Empire Polo Tavern. It is a very good time all the time there. I may have nightmares of itm but as the Ladies say “it was interesting.” and they can not do it no matter how good they ride. Polo is still trying to be sold as the “blue collar sport” and it is never going to be one. Do the math. It takes 6 to 8 horses, 10 acres and a lot of water and workers to play this game. So if you figure it takes 64 horses, at least 8 workers and 5 maintenance men and 5 million gallons of water + all the support like tractors, mowers, fertilizer, shoers, vets, and feedmen. It goes on and on and that’s just 1 field and 2 teams. As Buttercup said “these people do not drive Ford Trucks who pay for this.” So lets go to the Ferrari dealer and find out who runs his advertising campaign and forget trying to convince kids to play polo until they are old enough to really do it. Like she said “Polo Kids play polo anyway. To think we are going to get the next generation from the local business group is not feasible.” So lets find the real people with the real money. It is like buying a Ferrari or a big Mercedes, its expensive and that’s the way it is.
In the real world Mother Nature stopped some big polo in Palm Beach as nobody got to see Adolfo Cambiaso in action vs. Skeeter, but they may get their chance come Saturday. The Riceman (Shane Rice) is doing well on the west coast of Florida and the Surfer (Diego Cossio) is keeping on the roll in good old Boca Raton, FL where Polo is played in front of a real stadium. Way down south it was Tiny Tomas Pieres being the big man in the first big one in Baraloche, Argentina.
There are a bunch of new clubs being developed in south Florida from Ocala to Boca. There are like 6 being set up and some old ones got new life as Gulfstream is on again. They say it fell out of the sale and the same is about to happen to El Dorado Polo out here in California. So we will not be buried for a little while. Maybe we will get some new clubs going out west.
The good news is Super Horse Barbaro is still winning his battle of survival and apparently doing well. We may have a warm spell on the way out West. We will just not have Orange Juice for the vodka and very few limes for the Coronas as our fruit was frozen in the frost. Football will be leading the sports charge this week as I predict the Indy people will take the Pats out and Aint’s will whip the Wind. So we shall see you at polo. You do not need to watch Football because you already know what’s going to happen! See ya.
