One of the most amazing sights I have ever seen happened today in polo. I have seen trips in the air for 200 yds. ,cut shots from140 yds win a game and on and on ,but when have you ever seen 150 yrs hauling a _ _ down the field with the ball? I did today. Dempsey Mork, often known as the GRAY GHOST of La Mancha, was smokin’ down the field in a very good run when I realized it was the Ambassador Glen Holden trying to ride him off. In the last 10 yds he did. but it was so cool to see these two men battling it out in the league game/ They are both much older than me for sure. One of them is close to 80 and the other near 70. It was so cool to see this battle today. Dempsey won this one.
It was a fitting picture to start the day and also a tribute to two of the finest men in our sport to be battling it out in the heat of the game. This was also was the first tournament game of young Madeline Cobb, granddaughter of another senior player Mack Jason who was also there at the game.
The rest of the day went this way . . .
A new comer for Feb. was and is Cam Clark Ford. They are playing in the 4-goal/6 chukker. Cam Clark Fordy stoppied the hot hand of Vladimir Rivkin and his Double Eagle squad. In the La Mancha vs. Gechache game of the 4-Goal/4 Chukker it was The Gray Ghost (Dempsey Mork) running the show and getting a big performance out of his youngsters the Wolfman, (Ashton Wolf), Jean Jacques Humbert and Lady Cobb. The return of Big Al is being looked forward to as Kentfield was too much for Empire.
A new team in the 16-Goal League, the Governor (Pat Nesbitt) and Grant’s Farm/Windsor Cap hit the field smokin’ as he said “hit “and they did. Away he went to the flag as he scored 3. Together Pat Nesbitt and Andy Busch led their team to the top of the heap on the Int’l. field over Long Beach. In the 8-Goal it was Casa Blanca getting back to the win section as they beat newcomers Shanghai , the Steve Armour Camp out of Houston. The Zipper (Bill Ziering) and Rancho Santa Fe stopped January’s champs Friendly Chevy (formerly known as Generation Motors)which is a first loss for Mr. Smooth in this 4-Goal/4 Chukker league. Lady Luttrell ran her streak to 4 and 0 as she won both her games in both the 4-Goal/4 chukker and 8-Goal Leagues. Cotterel Farms I and Cotterel Farms II won over Aspen Oaks (8-Goal) and Storm Cats (4-Goal) who had a very high-end play by EDPC Manager Susan Stovall. She stole the ball from the high-goaler and spun around and buried it in the goal, but she needed one more as they lost in OT. Young Gun Jesse Neuworth (Maui/MC Polo) in the 8-Goal had a coming out game as he was on-the-fly often, but just short as another Young Gun Mini Mac (Julian Mannix of The Hawks) was hot. The Hawks of Fish Creek were too much for Maui/McPolo. It was a big day for ORE/PAC as they put the brakes on Park Lane in the 4-Goal/4 Chukker. In another game a Hawaiian had better luck as Mrs. Krista Hawley-Bonaguidi and Hanalei Bay 2 bounced FMB/Long Beach. Rancho Amistad missed their Wolf as they bled red and were taken out by a Little Young gun named Patrick Uretz of in the final game of the day . Well the weather was super and it is Super Bowl time and guess what Polo will be over early today for your Super Bowl P A R T Y because it all starts at 9:30.
