A Look Back at our Best 20 Goal Polo Season Ever
At Santa Barbara Polo Club
A Huge crowd attended the finals of the PCO on September the 6th here in Santa Barbara. The most beautiful trophy in polo ( Pacific Coast Open) was celebrating its 100 year anniversary with 8 twenty goal teams fighting for the championship. There was standing room only on both sides of the field as the two finalists took the field.
The Energy Resources Group (ERG) team of Scott Wood, played against Andy Busch’s Grants Farm Manor. The match turned out to be the best game in memory, as the outcome was not decided until the last moments of the final Chukker. The line score went as follows; GFM vs ERG 2-2, 4-3, 6-7, 8-8, 9-10, 13-11. At the end of the 4th chukker the score was tied at 8 goals apiece. All four players had scored for GFM and Gonzalo Del Tour led the scoring for ERG. In the 5th chukker ERG went ahead with goals by Blake and De Narvaez. This brought on the showdown in the last chukker. De Narvaez opened the scoring in the 6th to put ERG two goals ahead, Andy Busch got a goal to bring GFM back to within one, Jeff Hall converted a penalty 3 after missing one in the early part of the chukker, then Sugar Erskine put GFM on top to stay with only 1:20 left in the 6th on a great run to goal that brought the crown to its feet. Jeff Hall added one at the final horn and GFM took home the coveted PCO Trophy. Jeff Hall won the Robert Skene Trophy for the outstanding player of the 20 Goal Season.
The 20 Goal Season here in Santa Barbara was one to remember as there were 8 teams competing for the series of three major 20 Goal trophies. Bob Jornavaez came to SB for the first time with his Valiente Team. Another first time team was The Avendano brothers with Patagones. The second year team of Lucchese for John Muse was back for another year. Three of our staple entrants were the Ganzi’s with Audi Polo, Lyndon Lea with Zacara, and Ben Soleimani with his Mansour team.
