THE GOVERNOR’S CUP COMES TO A CLOSE AS THE U.S.OPEN TAKES OFF

Eldorado Polo Club had its smallest turnout ever in the 50 year history of the club for the 2007 Governor’s Cup which ended on Sunday, April 1st. Never the less they have two very good teams in the Finals so its still a big one to win. On one team it’s the Big Mac (Fred Mannix, Sr.) leading Fish Creek against a very tough and young Friendly Chevorlet without the Master Mr. Smooth (Curt Hughes) who is packing a broken wing, but his son Lance is covering for him. they do have to be the favorites, but Fish Creek has a habit of coming through in the finals.

It’s a hard swinging Henry [EZ] Zavaleta leading Fish Creek. They also have the youngest gun of them all in form of hard-riding Brianna Galindo. She is copying Uncle Hector every time she hits the turf as she is flying so fast. There are several other finals as well in the Lt. Governor’s Cup and the 3-goal Tack Mart Cup. The big one of the day is the finals of the La Quinta Cup just east of town at La Quinta Polo Club as they have their 8-goal finals. The La Quinta Polo Club is located at 65th and Van Buren. Its easy to find. Just drive to see a very green field on your right.

Down south in Florida the US Open is underway with 14 teams competing for the biggest polo tournament in the US. In this tournament horses cost $150,000 dollars. Its another world from California polo where we are begging for teams above 4 goals.

In the first round of 4 brackets Brianna Galindo’s Uncle Hector is coming from behind to beat White Birch. Tommy Lee Jones and his San Saba team stopped Mike Azzaro and Laurence Wallace. Pony Express and super stars Batista Heguy and Carlos Gracida lost in overtime to Jedi who has some new guns Pablo Madonugh and Juan Nero. Pablo played a 22 year old horse named Paloma a full chukker and oh yes, he is 9 goals. Sunday there is a lot of action with Adolfo Cambiaso in his first game vs. two other superstars from the Pieres family tree, Facundo and Gonzalo, Jr. Skeeterville and Catamount with “Nick the Stick” (Nick Roldan) playing his first game of the US Open this year. Last but not least comes Iron Man Jeff Blake hitting the turf for Lechuza and they take on defending champs Los Monjitas. So from the East coast to the West the weather is good and the polo better. See ya.
