It has been at least 26 years since 3 brothers won a major high-goal polo tournament  in the U.S.  There are some similarities this year.  It was about 3 miles away and a generation away from where its going to happen on Sunday.  It was the finals of the Gold Cup and for many years it was the biggest tournament in the U.S. Because of the time of year it occurred (spring) it was played in Palm Beach at the Palm Beach Country Club.

It was the beginning of a monster run by White Birch Farms as Peter Brant would begin his Florida dominance with 3 brothers  . . . Alfonso, Gonzalo and Paul Pieres.  They won the finals of the 1983 Gold Cup beating, I believe, the late Gonzalo Tanoria in the finals on Glenlivet-Scotch team.  White Birch had Gonzalo Pierex, father of Facundo, Gonzalito and Nicolai , who also started his major run. Gonzalo and Peter would go on to win 6 Gold Cups over the next 7 years and quite a run it was. They only had one win with the 3 brothers.  This will alsobe  just be 1 year as Gonzalo, Jr. is finally going to be 10 as he is allover the World except for here.  He well may be the best player in Florida this year.    I just found it interesting that so many brothers play polo, but seldom in the U.S. do we see 3 brothers on a winning team together. Their will be a roadblock, however,  as standing in their way will be Adam Snow and big bad Ed Astrada.  We shall see as the sun sets on the Winter- Spring meet in Florida this Sunday night .

Good luck to all the participating teams.

P.S. I WAS WRONG IT WAS 25 YEARS AS 3 ASTRADAS WON THE GOLD CUP IN 2008 AS POINTED OUT BY SHANE WINKLER  I HAVE SHORT TERM MEMORY LOSS. I GUESS I WAS AT THAT GAME I THINK.

See ya.
