Who? Well these two men were the main ingredients to make the Lechuza Carcas Polo team who are also the British Open Champs. They were in every game and they play with a couple of seasoned pros by the name of Merlos. The Merlos are still rated 10 goals in some places and have been here before . . . Champs of the British Open. You see in England, unlike the USA, you have to have at least one Englishman on your team as well as a Patron who is considered a sub for an Englishman if not from the UK. A very big part of the reason there are more high goalers in England than the US these days is because they get chances to play the good polo. In England there were 20 teams in the Gold Cup and 22 teams in the Queens Cup. These tournaments were 22-goal level, so if ever team has to have at least 1 English born player + a Patron you do the math and see how many have a chance to play. There have not been 22 Americans in all the High Goal in the US more or less even with the sponsors. Thats the way we build our polo . . . buy foreign parts.
Howeverm this is not the point. Its about Henry Fisher and his dream to make it and he did with this rule in place. There are a lot of young lads trying for those 20 or 30 spots and Henry has battled a bunch of them and worked his tail off for the last year to make it from a groom in Florida and BA to the daily grind. He still made it! He is the only Englishman to win the 2007 British Open and he deserves it. Well done Henry Fisher.
The big man of them all is Victor Vargas. He is not a big man with an approx. height of about 5’8”, but he is a many you know is big in ever other way. Victor is as nice as can be. He has a lovely wife and works somewhere everday. Victor may be in Carcas, Venzuela in the morning and Palm Beach in the PM or headed to Europe as the sun sets in South America, but you know he is working. Victor will be happy when he gets there no matter if he is sitting at breakfast with a President of a country and having tea with the grooms that afternoon. He has very fast cars, fast horses and a airplane nearb . Victor deserved to win this tournament and he is the reason Henry got to do it too. Well done to you two and the Mighty Merlos’s as well.
