Airstream (Ben Lynch, Matias Magrini, Kris Kampsen and Guille Aguero) recorded an 11-9 win over Beluga (Chris Brant, Naco Taverna, Tommy Biddle and Salvador Ulloa) Friday afternoon at the Greenwich Polo Club in the 20-goal USPA Monty Waterbury Cup competition. The victory boosted their record to 2-1 while Beluga suffered their third consecutive loss in as many outings.
The 18-goal Beluga team received two goals by handicap to start the game but were unable to score in the first chukker. A pair of goals from the field from Guille Aguero tied the game at 2-2 in the opening chukker as Beluga was unable to mount an effective attack in the opening seven minutes of play.
Salvador Ulloa gave Beluga the lead back with the first goal of the second k but Airstream returned fire. Goals from Kris Kampsen and Aguero closed out the period with Airstream taking the lead, 4-3.
Tommy Biddle converted a penalty shot for Beluga, tying the game at 4-4. Airstream stormed the Beluga goal in the third period. Fouls proved costly for Beluga, however, with Kampsen converting from the 30 and 60-yard marks. At the end of the first half it was Airstream in the lead by two goals, 6-4.
Airstream had the momentum entering the fourth chukker and Kampsen was on fire. Three more goals from Kampsen (one on a penalty conversion) went unanswered as Airstream raced out to a five goal, 9-4 lead.
Ulloa stopped e Kampsen scoring streak at five consecutive goals with the opening goal of the fifth chukker, 9-5. Kampsen scored the final goal of the period, however, and Airstream held on to their five goals lead, 10-5.
Sixth chukker goals from Ula and Chris Brant gave the Beluga team some hope as they cut the Airstream lead down to three goals, 10-7. Kampsen connected on a shot that gave him eight goals on the day and Airstream found themselves in front by four goals, 11-7. Ulloa scored the final two goals of the game but the outcome had long been decided as Airstream left the field with the 11-9 victory.
Kampsen led all scorers with eight goals three on penalty shots). Aguero added three goals for the win. Ulloa’s five goals were high for Beluga. Brant and Biddle each added a goal and the team received two goals by handicap.
The USPA Monty Waterbury Cup tournament continues with two games scheduled to be played on Sunday, June 19th featuring the undefeated (3-0) White Birch team (Santino Magrini, Hilario Ulloa, Mariano Aguerre and Peter Brant) facing Airstream in a 10am game. At 3pm Beluga and Postage Stamp (Annabelle Gundlach, Brandon Phillips, Nick Manifold and Joao Paolo Ganon) will both be looking for their first win.
