Kris Kampsen-APWhen you’re hot, you’re hot, and Sunday seemed to be the day for Airstream’s Kris Kampsen as he scored fourteen times in leading Airstream (Peter Orthwein, Kris Kampsen, Guille Aguero and Mariano Gonzalez) to an 18-13 win over Heathcote (Steve Lefkowitz, Naco Taverna, Tommy Biddle and Nick Manifold) in the opening round of the 2013 Tommy B. Glynn Memorial Tournament at Connecticut’s Greenwich Polo Club.

Heathcote received three goals by handicap from the 20-goal Airstream team, and added another to their total on a 60-yard penalty conversion from Tommy Biddle.  Kris Kampsen scored three times for Airstream (two on penalty shots), and cut the Heathcote first chukker advantage to a single goal, 4-3.

Kampsen tied it up at 4-4 with the opening goal of the second period.  Two more goals from the field from Kampsen had Airstream on top, 7-6 at the end of the chukker.  Steve Lefkowitz and Tommy Biddle supplied single goals for Heathcote.

Mariano Gonzalez scored his first goal of the game in the third chukker, extending the Airstream lead to two goals, 8-6.  Biddle converted his second penalty goal of the day, and Guille Aguero closed out the scoring in the chukker.  At the end of the first half, Airstream continued to lead, 9-7.

Goals were plentiful in the fourth period, with Heathcote cutting into the Airstream lead once again.  Biddle scored on an opening penalty shot followed by goals from Kampsen and Aguero, 11-8.  Naco Taverna and Biddle added single goals from the field, and trailed by one, 11-10.   Gonzalez and Biddle closed out the chukker with single goals for the 12-11 score.

An early Airstream foul sent Biddle to the penalty line in the fifth chukker where he converted the 60-yard shot for a 12-12 tie.  Kampsen responded with a scoring spree, scoring two goals on penalty conversions and adding another from the field, putting Airstream in front, 15-12.

Heathcote fought valiantly to cut the Airstream lead, but to no avail.  Kampsen and Biddle exchanged penalty conversions in the opening minutes of the game for a 16-13 score. But that was where it ended.  Airstream’s Kris Kampsen kept the party rolling as he scored two goals to end the chukker and the game in an 18-13 Airstream win.

Airstream’s Kris Kampsen led all scoring with fourteen goals, (six on penalty shots).  Teammates Aguero and Gonzalez added two goals apiece in the win.  Tommy Biddle set the pace for Heathcote with eight goals, three from the field and five on penalty shots.  Lefkowitz and Taverna scored single goals in the loss.

Tournament action continues on Thursday, June 6th at 6PM.   Airstream will try to keep its winning ways alive when Heathcote (1-0) faces White Birch (0-0).
