Alfredo Cappella Barabucci scored the winning goal in overtime for a 14-13 Alegria victory in Hurlingham Open play Sunday.

Alfredo Cappella Barabucci (substituting for the injured Fred Mannix-broken finger) scored the winning goal in overtime Sunday in Hurlingham Open competition. Yesterday’s game between Alegria (Polito Pieres, Hilario Ulloa, Lucas Monteverde and Alfredo Cappella Barabucci) and La Aguada/Las Monjitas (Lucas James, Cristian Laprida, Eduardo Novillo Astrada and Alejandro Novillo Astrada) was postponed after the skies opened up at halftime of an 8-8 contest.

The two teams returned to the pitch at noon on Sunday and the battle continued.

The two teams exchanged goals in the fifth (9-9); the sixth (10-10); the seventh (12-12) and the eighth (13-13) before a goal from Barabucci gave Alegria the 14-13 win.

Polito Pieres scored six of his team-high eight goals on penalty shots. Hilario Ulloa added three goals and Lucas Monteverde scored once.  Alfredo Cappella Barabucci scored on a penalty shot earlier in the game, but his backhander in overtime for a goal carried Alegria to the victory.

Alegria was a finalist in last year’s Argentine Open and looked to be a potential contender with Ellerstina and La Dolfina this year until an injury (broken finger on mallet hand-right) sidelined team captain Fred Mannix.

The 9-goaler was replaced by Alfredo Cappella Barabucci, however, and the team pressed on, hoping to get Mannix back into the lineup in time for the Argentine Open.
