Indio, CA (December 7, 2008) – With a second tournament victory in as many tries, Bill Garlock’s Park Lane polo team is securely parked on top after winning the Eldorado Polo Club’s Go Honey tournament. However, this victory, over Empire, was not nearly as easy as the triumph in the Road Runner two weeks ago.
Empire, given no chance to even make the final, defeated Deep Water Grill on Saturday and found themselves in a three-way tie for second spot behind the undefeated Garlock crew. With all three teams, including Aspen Oaks, having identical net goals, Empire squeaked in with the highest gross goal total.
Coming in as huge underdogs, Empire jumped at the start as Lolo Payan ran from the initial throw-in and easily scored. With a pair from Antonio Juarez in the opening frame and one on handicap, the ‘dogs’ led by two. Park Lane came back in the second and trailed by just one (5 – 4) at the half.
As competitive as the first two chukkers were, the third was not and was all Park Lane. The combination of Manny Rodriquez and Rolondo Obregon – and Garlock scoring on a super near side tail shot – was simply too much for Empire and the lead belonged to Park Lane 8 – 5. In the fourth, Empire came to within one at 8 – 7 but that was to be it and the Garlock Gang prevailed 11 – 7. It was by far the best game of either tournament.
For the winners Garlock led with four goals (two fouls), Rodriguez had three, with Obregon and Daniel Galindo, playing his strongest offensive game, scoring twice each.
Payan had four (one foul) for Empire as Juarez contributed two. The award at the start completed the total.
