Pat Powell and his Blazers polo team recovered from a start that was as cold as the Southern California weather, and defeated Dan Horn and Leigh Brecheen’s Palm Desert foursome to win the Eldorado Polo Club’s 2013 Tony Veen Memorial Tournament.
Starting as hot as their red shirts, Palm Desert, with an award of one-half, scored three quick goals and were running away in the early going. The Blazers recovered somewhat to count twice and the first was over with Palm Desert up by 1.5 with a score of 3.5 – 2.
Horn and Co. outscored Powell’s group 3 – 2 in the second and led by 2.5 going into the third at 6.5 – 4.
The Blazers warmed up in third as they scored twice to just one from Palm Desert to cut the lead to 1.5 with a count of 7.5 – 6 at the ‘half’.
With the Blazers now fully recovered from the cold, the fourth period was pretty much theirs as they outscored Palm Desert 3 – 1 and now led for the first time in the game at 9 – 8.5.
The final was quiet with the Blazers scoring once to win the trophy by a score of 10 – 8.5.
For the victorious Blazers, Kyle Fargey scored five times (4 fouls), Canelo Sylvestre and Jake Devane had two each, and Powell counted one.
Danny Walker and Federico Wulff scored three each (1 foul each) for Palm Desert while Horn and Brecheen supplied one apiece.
