The Houston Polo Club continued its Spring Season with The Cardiac Cup at 4 p.m. on May 17, 2009, with two matches and a special charity event, benefitting the Texas Children’s Heart Center. The polo action began with a two-goal exhibition match of Shamrock vs. Tejas that showcased some of HPC’s up-and-coming players. Tejas’ Charles Fridge (-1) and Allee Messina (-1), along with Jeff Anon (0) and Daniel Fernandez (3), introduced the Cardiac Cup guests to the Sport of Kings in an match against Shamrock’s Chris Williams (0), Marcus Pullicino (0), Mark Prinsloo (3), and Lara Straussfled / Aashish Shah (-1).  Shamrock and Tejas scored one goal each to end in a 1-1 tie.

Following the Tejas/Shamrock match, the main event got underway as Kris Brown of the Houston Texans helped a couple of special young patients from Texas Children’s Heart Center throw in the ball for the 8-goal feature match. Isla Carrol’s Sergio Silvestre (3), Chris Nevins (4), C.B. Scherer (0) and John Goodman (1) came out strong in the first half with seven unanswered goals against Steven Armour (0), Stan Stratton (0), Juan Curbela (4) and Joe Henderson (4) of Shanghai/Tres Osos. During the half-time divot stomp, fans cooled off with ice cream from Texas Southern Ice Cream and a wine tasting by Moet Hennessey. Then the action returned to the field as Curbela and Henderson staged a comeback in the 4th with 2 goals, but ended the day with a 9-2 loss against Isla Carrol. Dr. Charles Fraser and Dr. Richard Freidman from TCH’s Heart Center presented the teams with custom jerseys and saddle blankets created especially for The Cardiac Cup, as well as watches from IW Marks and the crystal trophy from Baccarat.  Chris Nevins was awarded the Maker’s Mark “Shot of the Day”.
