Texas – Roni Duke, Chris and Colleen Williams, California – Kit Neacy, Lynni Hutton, Kate Weber and Richard Varje and Washington State – Suzy Dix all came to Careyes Polo Club, located on the Pacific Coast of Mexico, to enjoy polo, boating, fishing and sunshine. Different activities were planned for the ladies and their companions including shopping at near by Barra de Navidad for local Mexican arts, fishing for sword fish, staying at one of the big houses, Mi Ojo, beach ride on pristine Teopa and through the jungle and most important relaxing. Bill Devane, Deb Morrison, Mary Caryea , Chris Bergsma , Keith Utter and Stephanie Lindahl were the support group for the players.
Tournament play was on Friday and Saturday with the score caring over – making 8 chukkers to decide the winner.All players were mounted on horses owned by Giorgio Brignone and the Careyes Polo Club. Each team fielded a gentleman player with Chris Williams playing for Tortugas along with Roni Duke, Kit Neacy and Lynni Hutton and the Tejones team captioned by Kate Weber, Suzy Dix, Colleen Williams and Richard Varje. Visiting Julie Roenisch from Calgary Polo Cub and local Manuel Rios were the umpires for both games. On Friday Chris Williams lead the scoring of the Tortugas with 3 goals and Kit Neacy with one. For the Tejones, Suzy Dix led her team with 3 goals and Kate Weber scoring one. Tie game the first day – 4 to 4.
Second day – all game faces in place and winning on their minds. First chukker – no score. Second chukker Roni Duke put one thru for the Tortugas, 4 -3 . Third chukker Kate Weber and Suzy Dix each had one for the Tejones, 5 – 4. Last chukker all 8 players wanted the silver and Roni Duke put one thru again and well as Chris Williams but the Tejones answered with a goal from Kate Weber. All tied 6 to 6 and time ran out. Both teams decided it was a great way to end their visit to Careyes with everyone a winner.Chris Williams and Suzy Dix were leading scorers and were presented with special Careyes memorabilia.
