Denver Teams Travel to Utah
Pharmacy Cup Polo Match and Champagne Brunch
On Saturday, June 6, the first ever Pharmacy Cup Polo Match and Champagne Brunch with proceeds benefiting the University of Utah College of Pharmacy and the new Skaggs Pharmacy Institute was held at the Salt Lake County Equestrian Park, 10800 So. 2200 West in South Jordan.
Polo in Utah . . .
The sport of polo has a history at the U of U dating back to 1926 when Captain Winfred C. Green lead a team of Utes during matches against Stanford, USC, and the University of Arizona, among others. The Utah squad was one of only a handful of intercollegiate teams, but they proved to be the envy of all the others with their sterling team of horses, courtesy of the R.O.T.C. and Fort Douglas.
Years later, the polo team eventually disbanded, and polo has since been a faint memory at the U, and the state of Utah as a whole. On June 6, the College of Pharmacy rekindled an old flame by bringing polo back to Utah and offering a glimpse of the “Sport of Kings” to the community.

(LITTLETON) – Despite an economic downturn, the 2009 Schomp BMW Denver Polo Classic was a huge success this weekend. During its three-day run at the exclusive Polo Reserve Development in Littleton, the Schomp BMW Denver Polo Classic raised more than $350,000 for children’s charities in Colorado.
More than 3,000 people attended the weekend-long fundraiser, showing their support for children’s programs across the state. Now in its 22nd year, the Schomp BMW Denver Polo Classic has become a summer-time tradition; featuring some of Denver’s finest restaurants, entertainment and world-class polo.
“Once again, our sponsors and members rose to the occassion and raised a tremendous amount for 50-plus chairities that we will support through our granting-giving process.” said Orlin Camerlo 2009 Denver Active 20/30 President.
The Schomp BMW Denver Polo Classic is organized by the Denver Active 20/30 Children’s Foundation, a non-profit men’s service organization for business leaders between the ages of 20 and 39.
Given the economic climate, 20/30 is receiving more requests for funding than in years past. Last year, the money raised by the Denver Polo Classic helped support 55 children’s charities in Colorado – this year’s efforts will make the same donations possible.
Congratulations to the Ritz Carlton polo team (aka Valiente) who was crowned the champion of the Schomp BMW Denver Polo Classic on Sunday by defeating the BKD CPAs and Advisors team (aka Cotterell Farms) by an overtime score of 10 to 9.
