Quarantine released today
This certainly went well…thanks to everyone for their cooperation. The EHV quarantine at
Empire West ends today as we await an official email from the State of California. I know
quarantines are painful and sometimes costly to those involved, but they are necessary. We were
lucky this time, because not only was this the non-neurologic strain, but the exposed area was
isolated and quickly quarantined. It could have been worse. If you don’t think so, look at these
numbers from the New Mexico racetrack where the containment did not actually go so smoothly
and they have been under quarantine since the middle of January and at least 5 horses died or
were euthanized. Three horses were also somehow released to go to Turf Paradise in Arizona
and they where 1 of those died and caused that facility to have a 21 day quarantine of their own.
Sunland Park and surrounding area, New Mexico.
Today’s tally of EHV-1 confirmed positive horses is 74. Two of the horses confirmed today
reside in Texas; they belong to a trainer who has horses at Sunland. The information on these two
positive horses was submitted to the Texas Animal Health Commission for follow-up.
To date, 17 barns have been released and 10 barns (including Frontera and Sunland) maintain
their exposed status…
Number of horses diagnosed positive for the EHV-1 virus to-date: 72 in New Mexico and 2 in
Texas.
Number of horses released today from the isolation barn: 2
Number of exposed barns that have been returned to non-exposed status to-date: 17
Thanks again to all
