Ellerstina’s Mariano Aguerre and Facundo Pieres congratulate one another after HJurlingham Open win.
Ellerstina (Facundo Pieres, Gonzalo Pieres Jr., Mariano Aguerre and Nicolas Pieres) and La Aguada (Facundo Sola, Guillermo Caset Jr., Miguel Novillo Astrada and Ignacio Novillo Astrada) registered demonstrative wins Sunday afternoon in 2014 Hurlingham Open competition, completing first round play in the prestigious event.
Ellerstina scored a 24-14 victory over a Chapaleufu lineup (Pepe Heguy, Nachi Heguy, Francisco Bensadon and Bautista Heguy) that was missing an injured Eduardo Heguy.
The two teams played evenly in the opening seven minutes of play, trading goal for goal. The score was all even at 3-3 at the end of the first chukker.
Ellerstina began to get into rhythm in the second period. Three Ellerstina gals were answered by a pair of scores from Chapaleufu. Ellerstina took a narrow 6-5 lead into the third chukker.
Two more Ellerstina goals went unanswered as Facundo Pieres began to demonstrate why he is one of the top two players in the game today. Chapaleufu was unable to score and fell behind, 8-5.
The Ellerstina team began to click in the fourth. Ellerstina put five goals on the scoreboard while holding the veteran Chapaleufu team to a single score. At the end of the first half Ellerstina was in possession of a seven goal, 13-6 lead.
Ellerstina continue to pick up speed in the fifth. The Ellerstina defense allowed a single goal while adding four more goals, stretching their lead to ten goals, 17-7.
Chapaleufu made a brief rally in the sixth, scoring three times, but Ellerstina had no intentions of letting the game slip away. Matching Chapaleufu, goal-for-goal, Ellerstina rode off the field at the end of the sixth chukker on top of a 20-10 score.
Ellerstina added two goals in the seventh period without a response from Chapaleufu. The lead swelled to twelve goals, 22-10.
Chapaleufu had one of its most productive chukkers in the eighth, scoring four times. Ellerstina was on cruise control but managed to add two more goals for the overwhelming 24-14 win.
Facundo Pieres led all scoring with thirteen goals (four on penalty shots). Gonzalito Pieres and Nico Pieres each scored five times while Mariano Aguerre added a goal for the win. Bautista Heguy (substituting for Eduardo Heguy) scored seven of his eight goals on penalty conversions. Pepe Heguy, Nachi Heguy and Francisco Bensadon added two goals apiece in the loss.
La Aguada 19, Magual 10
In the final Hurlingham Open game of the weekend La Aguada ran over Magual (Alejandro Muzzio, Ignacio Toccalino, Marcos Di Paola and Jaime Garcia Huidobro) 19-10.
Jumping out to a 4-2 lead after the first chukker, La Aguada continued to control the game from start to finish.
La Aguada outscored Magual 3-2 in the second period and held a comfortable 10-6 lead after the fourth chukker.
Second half play was no kinder to Magual. La Aguada added three goals in the fifth chukker while Magual struggled to tally a single score. La Aguada stretched their lead to six goals, 13-7.
Facundo Sola continued to decimate the Magual defense scoring time and again. Two more sixth period goals went unanswered as La Aguada move in front by eight goals, 15-7.
Magual sowed some life in the seventh chukker, scoring twice while shutting out the La Aguada offense for the first time all day. Magual shaved two goals off of the La Aguada lead but remained six goals off the lead, 15-9.
La Aguada ended the game with a flourish. La Aguada added four more goals while limiting the Magual attack to a single goal. When the final horn sounded it was La Aguada with an impressive 19-10 win.
Facundo Sola led all scoring with ten goals (one on a penalty conversion). Sapo Caset scored four times (once on a penalty shot); Miguel Novillo Astrada added three goals and Ignacio Novillo Astrada scored twice in a losing effort,
Hurlingham Open play continues on Wednesday, October 22nd with Alegria (1-0) facing Miramar (0-1) at 2PM followed by a showdown between La Dolfina (1-0) and La Aguada/Las Monjitas (0-1) at 4:30PM.
