Ellerstina (Facundo Pieres, Mariano Aguerre, Gonzalo Pieres and Nico Pieres) got off to a rocky start in Monday afternoon’s rain-postponed Tortugas Open game at the Tortugas Polo Club, falling behind 2-0 after first chukker goals from Washington’s (Diego Cavanagh, Tomas Garcia Del Rio, Facundo Sola and Alfredo Cappella) Facundo Sola and Tomas Garcia Del Rio at the Tortugas Country Club in Pilar, Buenos Aires.
Goals from Sola (penalty shot) and Del Rio went unanswered in the opening seven minutes of play while the realigned Ellerstina team (Maria no Aguerre replacing Polito Pieres-one game suspension) got settled.
The two teams traded goals in the second period with Sola’s second penalty goal of the day giving Washington a three goal lead before Facundo Pieres converted a penalty shot to get Ellerstina on the scoreboard, trailing 3-1.
Ellerstina was up to speed by the third chukker. Facundo Pieres lit it up with three goals from the field. Gonzalito Pieres scored his first goal of the day. A solid defensive effort kept Washington off of the scoreboard as Ellerstina took a 5-3 lead.
Fourth chukker goals from Facundo Pieres and Gonzalito Pieres were complimented by a second consecutive shutout effort by their defense. After four periods of ply, the led belonged to Ellerstina, 7-3.
The pressure on the Washington defenders increased in the fifth with Facundo Pieres scoring three times from the field and adding a penalty goal. Washington found it difficult to score with their backs to the game, but came up with a single penalty goal from Sola. At the end of the fifth chukker it was Ellerstina control of a seven goal lead, 11-4.
Facundo Pieres and Mariano Aguerre kept the Ellerstina onslaught going in sixth chukker action, adding single goals. Washington picked up a penalty goal from Sola as Washington fell behind by eight goals, 13-5.
There was no letup from the Ellerstina side as they added three more goals to their total, humiliating Washington in a 16-5 victory. Two goals from Nico Pieres and a goal from Facundo Pieres ended a long day for Washington.
Facundo Pieres led all scoring with eleven goals (two on penalty conversions). Gonzalito Pieres and Nico Pieres scored two goals apiece and Aguerre added a goal for the win. Sola scored four penalty goals for Washington with Del Rio adding a goal from the field in the loss.
Tortugas Open action continues at 3:30pm on Saturday, October 8th when La Dolfina (Adolfo Cambiaso, David Stirling, Pablo MacDonough and Juan Martin Nero) faces La Aguada-Las Monjitas (Alejandro Novillo Astrada, Eduardo. Novillo Astrada, Miguel Novillo Astrada and Ignacio Novillo Astrada). Ellerstina returns to action on Sunday afternoon against Alegría (Guillermo Caset, Hilario Ulloa, Lucas Monteverde and Fred Mannix).
