A smothering defense and an explosive attack lifted Travieso (Teo Calle, Tony Calle, Pedro Falabella and Felipe Viana) over Mt. Brilliant/Faraway Polo (Bo Goodman, Hutton Goodman, Julian Daniels and Juan Monteverde), 12-4 Wednesday afternoon in the opening round of play in the 2016 Limited Edition 12-goal Series at the Grand Champions Polo Club.

Tony Calle scored the opening goal of the match followed by a 60-yard penalty conversion by 5-goaler Felipe Viana. The Travieso shut down the Mt. Brilliant/Faraway attack for the early 2-0 lead.

Two more goals from tony Calle and a goal from the field from Viana were complimented by another scoreless chukker from Mt. Brilliant/Faraway. Travieso was taking control of the game and extended their lead to five goals, 5-0.

Juan Monteverde finally got Mt. Brilliant/Faraway on the scoreboard with a goal in the third chukker, 5-1. Travieso fired back with a pair of goals from Viana (one from the field and the other on a 40-yard penalty conversion).  At the end of the first half Travieso was in charge of the game with a 7-1 advantage.

Another 60-yard penalty goal from Viana opened the second half, extending the Travieso lead to seven goals, 8-1. Monteverde responded for Mt. Brilliant/Faraway with a 60-yard penalty conversion and a goal from the field.  Travieso continued to led, 8-3.

Fifth chukker goals from Teo Calle and Viana went unanswered as Mt. Brilliant/Faraway was unable to break through the Travieso defense. With one period left in regulation play, Travieso held the reins with a 10-3 lead.

Two more Viana goals in the sixth and final chukker were countered by a 60-yard penalty conversion from Monteverde. At the sound of the final horn, Travieso celebrated the 12-4victory.

Viana led all scoring with eight goals (four on penalty conversions). Tony Calle accounted for three goals and Teo Calle scored once for the win.  Monteverde was credited with all four goals (two on penalty shots) for Mt. Brilliant/Faraway in a losing effort.

Play will continue in the Limited Edition 12-goal Series on Thursday, January 14th at the Grand Champions Polo Club with Goose Creek (Maureen Brennan, Marc Ganzi, Juan Bollini Jr. and Mariano Gonzalez) meeting Valiente (Rob Jornayvaz, Juan Martin Obregon, Facundo Obregon and TBA) at 3:30pm.
