What two incredible finals…The Nueva Escocia went to OT again…these two teams went to OT their last meeting and the result was the same-Hawk Hill/Smithfield by an overtime goal. In the USPA Eduardo Moore Finals, we were seconds away from another OT, when Clemente Zavaleta broke thru to goal after being awarded a penalty #5 mid-field. The EM Finals saw a strong showing by Longfield in the first chukker….a stronger showing by Shekomeko in the 2nd chukker….and then thru the next 3 chukkers, these two very talented squads wound up tied at the end of 5, 9-9.
Both games gave both teams options for the win. These four teams should have partied together all night because they could talk about “this play or that play” for weeks to come. Diet-Mountain Dew play of the day in Eddie Moore was a tie. Guy Merison’s incredible run to goal….and then Clemente’s run down the sideline…then centering to goal, pushing Bilbao off the play and scoring the nearside. But both of these games were full of “wow” plays….and we went right until dusk with the Eddie Moore.
On hand for trophy presentations were the tournament’s founder-Michael Levin, Millbrook Polo Founders-Dede & Eric Rosenfeld, Two foundational rocks of Mashomack polo-Oakleigh Sr and Oakleigh Thorne (also defending 2008 Eddie Moore Champion), and Mashomack President-Everett Cook. They presented the bronzes to an elated Shekomeko foursome of Guy, Conor, Clemente, and Henry. So Henry gets his second bronze in the EM. Notable mention to Oliver Merison…14 yrs of age…great stuff Oliver…and with his leg bleeding thru his whites from an injury the day before…truly the merison genes. Dad has to be very proud of both trophies…his son Oliver…and the bronze…and I think the bronze is a distant second. And Oliver was only one of four 14 year olds that participated amongst the nine teams in this year’s Eduardo Moore!
With all the rain, footing has been a challenge….but our fields crew at Mashomack is awesome. Lautaro Regina and his crew has done a fantastic job all through the tournament. What an outstanding effort to get the boards set up in back and get two very wet fields in playing shape. Lau, Sante, Marcus, Humberto…and all the guys…great job. Thank You so much !
And people… the score… 11-10. This is the 4th time in the past five years that the Eduardo Moore was decided by the 11-10 score. It was the same score the last time Enrique Zavaleta was collecting his “Rich Roenisch” bronze!
