Goose Creek’s Tomas Garcia del Rio attempts to back the ball against Airstream in Wednesday morning’s Monty Waterbury game against Airstream.   Goose Creek rode on to win, 13-9, and remain undefeated at 2-0.

Goose Creek (Maureen Brennan, Tomas Garcia Del Rio, Mariano Gonzalez and Marcos Garcia Del Rio) continued to impress with a 13-9 win over Airstream (Ben Lynch, Matias Magrini, Kris Kampsen and Guille Aguero) as the second round of play in the 2016 Monty Waterbury Cup got underway at the Greenwich Polo Club Wednesday morning.

Airstream took the field with Ben Lynch filling in for team captain Peter Orthwein in a defensive opening chukker that saw Goose Creek’s Mariano Gonzalez score the only goal of the chukker on a 60-yard penalty conversion for the 1-0 lead.

The pace escalated in the second period with Goose Creek getting a pair of goals from Gonzalez and a single goal from Tomas Garcia del Rio. Airstream countered with single goals from Kris Kampsen and Guille Aguero.  Goose Creek continued to lead, 4-2.

Goals were hard to come by in the third. Aguero scored the first goal of the period, cutting the Goose Creek le to a single goal, 4-3.  Gonzalez answered with a goal from the field to maintain their two goal lead, 5-3, at the end of the first half.

Goose Creek continued to pile on the goals as the fourth chukker got started. Marcos Garcia del Rio opened the scoring, 6-3, with Kampsen responding with a goal for Airstream, 6-4.  Tomas Garcia del Rio made it 7-4 with his second goal of the match, followed by another Kampsen score on a 30-yard penalty shot, 7-5.  Two goals from Tomas Garcia del Rio ended the chukker with Goose Creek in the lead by four goals, 9-5.

The two teams traded goals in the fifth period. Tomas Garcia del Rio added two more goals for Goose Creek and Gonzalez added a third.  Kampsen scored twice for Airstream with Aguero accounting for the third goal.  With one chukker remaining to be played, Goose Creek continued to lead by four goals, 12-8.

A defensively-oriented final chukker resulted in only two goals with Kampsen opening with a goal for Airstream, 12-0, and Gonzalez scoring the final goal of the match for a 13-9 Goose Creek victory.

Tomas Garcia del Rio and Gonzalez each scored six times for Goose Creek. Marcos Garcia del Rio was credited with a goal in the win.  Kampsen let the Airstream offense with six goals.  Aguero added three goals in a losing effort.

The win boosts Goose Creek’s record to 2-0 while Airstream falls to 0-1.

Monty Waterbury Cup play will continue on Thursday, weather permitting, with a 4pm game between White Birch (Santino Magrini, Hilario Ulloa, Mariano Aguerre and Peter Brant) and Beluga (Chris Brant, Naco Taverna, Tommy Biddle and Salvador Ulloa).  Following afternoon rains, the condition of the fields will be assessed at 11am Thursday morning and a decision will be made on the playability of the fields at that time.
