After trailing for the first three chukkers of the game, Great Oaks (2-0) scored in overtime to beat Black Watch (1-1) in the second round of play in the 2010 Hampton cup at the Bridgehampton Polo Club Wednesday afternoon at the Bridgehampton Polo Club by the score 12-11.
Tomas Garcia Del Rio scored eight of his game-high nine goals on penalty shots, including the game winner in the sudden-death overtime period.
Black Watch jumped out to an early 3-2 lead after the first chukker of play as 9-goaler Lucas Criado scored twice from the field and Nacho Figueras converted a penalty shot.
Tomas Garcia Del Rio scored once from the field and once from the penalty line for Great Oaks in the opening chukker.
Figueras scored from the field in the second period while Tomas Garcia Del Rio converted his second penalty shot of the day to keep the game close. Black Watch held on to a one goal lead, 3-2.
The two teams traded goals in the third period with Figueras and Criado scoring single goals while Marcos Garcia Del Rio and Tomas Garcia Del Rio each scored a goal for Great Oaks. Black Watch took the narrow 6-5 lead with them to the sidelines at halftime as the Great Oaks confidence continued to grow.
Larry Austin scored the only goal of the fourth chukker for Black Watch as Tomas Garcia Del Rio notched two more penalty goals for Great Oaks. The teams were all even at 7-7, and Great Oaks was beginning to feel its oats.
Black Watch got goals from Figueras, Criado and Austin in the fifth period. Great oaks got one goal from the field from Pablo Pieres and another penalty goal from Tomas Garcia Del Rio. With seven minutes left in regulation play, Black Watch held on to a precarious 10-9 lead,
Criado’s fifth goal of the game gave Black Watch an 11-9 advantage. Great Oaks tied it with two straight goals to force the overtime period.
Tomas Garcia Del Rio’s ninth goal of the game came on a Penalty 2 conversion for the 12-11 victory.
Tomas Garcia Del Rio set the pace for the winning Great Oaks team with nine goals. Marcos Garcia Del Rio scored twice and Pieres added a goal.
Criado led the Black Watch team with five goals. Figueras added four and Austin scored twice.
Hampton Cup action will continue on Friday, August 20 at 5pm when La Alegria (0-0) meets the Caballeros (0-1).
